Am I the only one who thinks that Flight of Icarus isn't... that great?
It's without shadow of doubt a great track... but I wouldn't put it in the top escalon of Maiden's compositions. But then again back in their Piece Of Mind to Seventh Son spree I think they've only released a bad song (Quest For Fire) and a skipable one (Sun And Steel). Everything else varies from great to absurdly excellent.

FOI with 7 votes so far... One of the best songs of Maiden ever!

And come on..., ''Still Life'' is a gem.

Geez, if I’d known there would be a conspiracy against 11:58 this round I would have downvoted Aces High. Oh well...

The “singles“ have always been less liked on here than outside the forum. Probably comes part and parcel with the hardcore nature of our fandom.

2 Minutes might be the best of the singles, and it seems to be falling prey to the ”there can be only three” mentality, but I want to throw a bone the way of Icarus. It might not be particularly edgy or unconventional, but it is one of the most “epic” 4 minute songs ever written.

Lyrically it tells an iconic tale, but it also does an outstanding job of doing the same musically, with rising tension, and drama. The pacing is deliberate, what feels measured in the beginning feels frantic in the end, and there is the adrenaline of joy and fear scattered throughout. The ending is so huge and feels so final and so earned. The instruments aren’t the main thing here, they exist support the melody and the story. Both the verses and the chorus have great hooks and the singing is young Bruce at his finest: clear, powerful and completely centre stage. And those solos.

Dont expect it to survive (it never does) but if it did it would belong. Love this song.

Where Eagles Dare to Revelations is my favorite 1-2 punch on any Maiden album. This is saying a lot as Maiden excels with their openers. Both songs perfectly thread the needle between catchy, energetic, musically exciting, and lyrically thoughtful. Revelations is quite possibly my favorite Maiden song.

I often consider my favorite album to be a tie between Piece of Mind and AMOLAD. Going through the discography backward reaffirms this for me. It also made me realize that there is no perfect Maiden album. Both AMOLAD and Piece have songs I could do without (The Pilgrim, Different World, Quest For Fire). They also each have songs that are almost there but not quite at the level of the rest of the album (Sun and Steel, To Tame a Land, The Longest Day). Still, these songs are very enjoyable in many ways and I tend not to skip them. In the case of Different World and Pilgrim, they fit the album and contribute to the whole experience. The weaker Piece of Mind songs are above average tracks in a sea of heavy hitters. In some ways, my favorite album is defined less by the best songs and more the quality of the weaker material.

That being said, what puts these two albums so high up for me is that the remaining songs are all top 20 worthy and I would rate them 9s or 10s. That’s 6 songs on each that are among the best songs the band has ever done. For me, no other album reaches this echelon.

Earlier people were talking about the experience of discovering an album and how it is impossible to separate the music itself from that experience. Piece of Mind is one of those first love albums for me. Will always be a contender for my favourite album period.
