Recording and publishing new music is nothing short of an investment in PR for touring it live. No profits from sales at the level the band could be satisfied with, even Maiden's status.
 
1980-1989 : 7 studio albums
1990-1999 : 4 studio albums
2000-2009 : 3 studio albums
2010-2019 : 2 studio albums
2020- now: 1 studio albums

There's a large amount of projection there in the chore/joy comment.

Of course it’s totally different.

Every gig they do on the road they get paid for. They don’t get paid anything to sit in a recording studio for a few months writing and recording, in fact it costs them to do this.

It makes no sense, that's their preferred approach (since 2000 or 2006), plus they can always change their style a bit, return to the roots to say, and Simon could bring something new, they just don't seem as enthusiastic, unfortunately. With Nicko in the band it probably would have been the same. If Adrian and Steve announce some plans for next year with their solo projects, it would be a bit harder for the band to work around and that would show their preferences now. They know the hits will always be more popular live, no matter what.

I totally agree with you. I would put the turning point even before 2015 .i said in another thread here that Steve Harris is a changed man since 2012 . What bothers me the most is how passionate he is with everything related to British Lion. It seems now British Lion is his work of love and Maiden well...his long time job. Yeah yeah i know what some of you will say 'he earned it " , "have some respect" , "be grateful " , " what have i done with MY life or how many albums have I released " but it hurts to see him like this . As a fan since 1986 yeah it hurts . And personally i dont care about another hits tour or another recap of their history.seen that again and again. I think this is the end of the road . Iron Maiden is a nostalgia act now. I really wish they prove me wrong but honestly can't see that happening.

Alot of people slow down in work when they are approaching their 70s, after all Maiden are all past retirement age! I am still hopeful that Maiden will put out another album but whether it is with the current lineup remains to be seen. Bruce and to a lesser extent Adrian still seem to want to keep recording and touring. Maybe Steve wants to do other things with the rest of his life.

We don't know what they're going to do in the future. 2027 will be a break from touring, but I suspect in 2028, they will be back for some festival shows and selected concerts in some countries. I think RFYL is the very last global tour, so they wanted to play as many stadium shows as possible. The documentary movie and spectacular tour, they want to finish the world tour in great style. Simon is the drummer hired just for touring, not a real member of Maiden. I don't think Steve considers him a studio drummer. Senjutsu is the very last studio album in 99%.
 
I'm curious to hear it, but TFF is the last album with a powerful sound to say (not like the previous one, but still), so I think that's good. Less muddy sound is always better. I think the rougher sound suits it, but maybe a more polished sound (effects and touches here and there) would be interesting, if it makes a noticeable difference. I would love to hear SJ polished.

I wouldn't say that about Steve with BL, but he said they are due for a new album. What about Maiden then, Steve? Ofc I'm not comparing the two processes and pressure. It's normal for a person to not be that passionate with stuff with the age, and Maiden indeed changed their views since 2012, but Steve should be the most passionate, we expect that, and Bruce, the most prolific writers. They always say that new music is important to them, let's see now. I don't think they have ideas for more Hits tours (Reunion era, 90s era, and rare stuff are the ones to do, but would they want).

And yet they celebrated his birthday. Let's wait and see. And he's been playing with him since 2012, plus studio material, albeit different.
