Iron Maiden News, Links, and Interviews

Videos from the show in Philadelphia.

Something interesting from a 2010 interview. Bruce mentioning continuing to record after the band stop touring.

I've always written off this idea despite Steve's recent comments, but if Bruce has the same mindset than I'm a bit more optimistic.

All of which leads to the inevitable question – the dreaded one – just how long can Maiden keep going?

Dickinson ponders this thoughtfully: “I don’t know. For at least the next five years, anyway. In 2008, when we’re planning to take out the ‘Powerslave’ stage set again, I’ll be 50. And I’m the baby of the band. By the time I’m 55, Nicko will be 60. And you have to ask whether we’ll still want to tour. I’m not saying that we wouldn’t carry on recording, but… for me, the bottom line has to be that we’ll stop the moment all of us realise that we can’t maintain our own high standards. To do anything else would be to compromise – and that’s not the Maiden way.”

But they are not anymore, so they should have stopped in 2019.

But why would they. They are going on their biggest tour ever next year.

I still doubt it, and especially since Bruce has resumed his solo career, but we'll see.

Only Nicko and not because of age. He plays faster than 2022! Some of the performances were rough then, but that's normal for a classic band and without touring for a couple of years. Despite everything, I think the band sounds more than good live now.

Biggest tour ever and overall sounds amazing.

Playing fast without groove and speeding up at the same time is way worse than slowing down a bit to maintain groove in a song.
I think every musician would agree with this point.

Comments like this could get you banned at the official Fan Club forum!

Joking aside, it has to be extremely difficult to know when to stop for not maintaining high standards, especially when there is so much money involved.

I have had to dial down a bit over there.

Yeah, it's impossible, and I would expect them to be very excited about next year in particular. I wouldn't stop, no way. But comments like that may not age well. Just like saying your new album is the best ever. Every. Single. Time.

What about power metal? :P
I get what you mean, but given the circumstances (and I know groove and fills are Nicko's thing), fast playing is great. Always is. We all hope he continues to recover. Remember Adrian and Bruce want to play slower and at this age is good to see fast playing, otherwise it would be bad. Playing faster sounds like a bad thing now? Although I can understand Bruce for some songs. Plus Maiden always speed up songs live. They also choose the more mid-tempo in the studio on purpose for the recent albums. I agree that some songs need a more subtle tempo, but it's not like Maiden's guitarists can't work it out, in the 80's or now. What is a live show without the energy that comes from the tempo. Another drummer will also play faster, but Nicko's drumming characteristics cannot be copied. Can a song like CSIT be played slower? Nope. Maiden shows have always been associated with energy and great stage show (the musicians are legend level), they still do that right. Nicko deserves credit for his playing now and for finding some of the songs to sound fine and to work even without fills. And I'm more optimistic about the celebration tour next year, he deserves it. The tour should be exciting.

All kinds of comments have been made over the years. Especially such about the best new albums, we all know why. I think the band knows and feels they still put on a good show, I doubt it's about money. They just love what they do and try to do it for as long as possible. As Bruce said in the long interview shared above - he takes a lot of pride in what he does and if he can't deliver (obviously talking about some time in the past), he wanted to help the band to find a new singer because the music is the most important in Maiden. He also mentioned that after a show they discuss the parts of songs they think they didn't played well enough that night.

Not the first time he says that the last years. To me it sounds like he is telling us Maiden will, or he wants to, replace members if needed to keep it going.

Idk, maybe (even more so if he replaces Roy in the studio as well), but I can't see that about all members, especially Steve and Dave. But they always say they are like family. And I think the band is trying to help (Adrian!) and ofc support Nicko. Hits or not, they should do that with some songs too.
