Iced Earth

Setlist is OK. I'll probably check it out for the Horror Show and Dystopia songs, but as for the rest, I'll just stick with Alive in Athens.
 
Anybody hear the new live thing? Reviews are pretty negative and as expected, they overdubbed the fuck out of it. Probably not gonna bother with it after reading reviews and seeing those godawful clips they uploaded.
 
I thought it was awesome. Stu struggles on some songs, but hey, no one can sing Barlow's songs as good as Barlow himself. He's certainly better than Ripper Owens. Stu's main problem is transition from normal singing to falsetto. I'm sure that over time (provided he stays in Iced Earth for few more years) he'll improve that too. I don't mind overdubbing, most live albums are overdubbed anyway. It's not as good as AIA because AIA has much louder audience, and ofc, has Barlow. Didn't see the video yet. I dunno why the clips were "godawful" really...
 
Well yea every live album has overdubs but it's really excessive with IE. Kills the live feeling. The clips were bad because of all the overdubs, Stu, and in general a lifeless performance. The show I saw earlier last year was much better; real love performance, Stu was on, no overdubs.
 
Well, I dunno. I really think Stu is giving it all on stage. He wasn't really good on that live stream from Bloodstock from last year, but he improved a lot for this album. I listened to some audience clips and he sounds the same. Though ofc I didn't listen to all of them so I can't compare. I don't think much of it is overdubbed except vocals or solos.
 
A vocal coach would help, maybe a different warmup method. But the rate he's going, he won't last long in IE. I'd give it one more album and tour, tops.
 
I'd compare the situation to the one in Helloween. Deris (current Helloween singer) struggled with older songs for a long long time until his voice grew accustomed to them and now he sounds pretty good. I wouldn't mind if Stu left and Barlow came back :P
