Another clue (like I said, I think this one could be very hard), some myths surround this figure about what this person was reputed to have done. Nevertheless, this sporting event that supposedly took place was whilst this person was at school.
 
Maybe we should try and find out what sport this person is participating in?  Or perhaps what country?

Yes I was. OK, I thought it would be tough - but either my clues where too unsubtle or he is more widely known than I suspected.

As an after thought, the other person I was going to suggest was Charles Dickens.
 
It was the clues, really.  I basically sat down and read the history of most english sport before I came across that.  Hell, I read all the golf stuff, too.
