Historical Figures 20 Questions

I want to narrow down the league he played the bulk of his career in.

15. So, in England?

Klinsman played for Tottenham.

I Would have opted for Lothar Matthaus, but he was a defender during his later days (although was predominantly midfield in his heyday). It could be Rudi Voller (famous for receiving a little present from Rijkaard during Italia 90) but he coached Germany to a world cup final in 2002.

But I would probably be more inclined to opt for Kohler.

17. He is not Klinsmann.

Coming back to that earlier hint, when I think about this strong character I didn't remember him as a player on another position besides midfielder or attacker (for you to find out which of the two).

However, he did play as a goalkeeper or defender (for you to find out which of the two), but only in a relatively short period of his long career.

18. Was he a World Cup winner?

The trouble I have is that I could use up all the questions trying to name this player as I have around 7 or 8 I could pick from.

OK, this means the player played for Germany in either the 1974 or 1990 wins.  Bearing in mind Foro has said he remembers him as a player, I'm hedging a bet that he won the World Cup with Germany in 1990. And as almost every player would have probably been born before 1950 in the '74 final, I really think we can rule that one out.

Judging by these comments, it has to Matthaus as he played in defence during his later part of his career AND he had an exceedingly long career as a midfielder. And he would probably be the most famous (and one of the most successful) German footballers of recent times.

That's a question?

I think it is! :)

19. It is Lothar Matthäus.

Well done mate! From all football players in the world, this one was probably the most hated one in the Netherlands, but I have quite some respect for him.

Check this stunning record:

In 1990, he was named European Footballer of the Year and World Soccer Player of the Year after captaining West Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup. One year later, he was also named the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year.

He has played in five World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) more than any other outfield player, and holds the record for the most World Cup matches played (25 games). He also won Euro 80, and played in Euro 84, Euro 88, and Euro 2000.

He is the most capped German player of all time, retiring with a total of 150 appearances (83 of them when the team was called West Germany) and 23 goals for the German national team.

Trouble is, I ruled out Matthaus when you said he wasn't a defender or goalie. He is also one of the most hated and the most admired Germans in the UK however, his record speaks for itself. Amazing player.

But he will always be remembered in England for the look on his face as Man U scored two goals in extra time in the 1999 Champions League final.

Sorry. I did my best to rephrase it in the next hint. Besides, I thought hardly anyone would remember him as "that defender of the Mannschaft".

And in the Netherlands most people enjoyed Van Basten's last minute 2-1 vs Germany in the semi-finale of Euro 1988. If not mistaken: in that very same stadium where Germany beat the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup final. Talking about ultimate revanche!

I do have one, but I think it may be pretty hard. However, I am willing to give some subtle and not so subtle clues every so often to allow you to research it - and by doing so, you will most likely find the answer. This person is an extremely well known person is certain circles, but not so in others and if you are willing to go with this one - then of we go.

Else, I do have in mind a more conventional figure from history.

So, the former or the latter?

Indeed, if I was to give any one of the clues I am thinking of, those in the circle of knowing will get it immediately. I would guess that most will not know who this character is, but everyone will know the other one.
