If he is no longer playing but still involved in the game, you would have to assume that he is in some coaching/managerial role. However, if his fame came from his playing era, then his time as a coach is probably not as successful or he is a TV pundit (for example, Alan Shearer is internationally more famed for playing the game than his punditry on the Beeb). If he is Dutch, I would rule out players like van Basten, Rijkaard, Gullit and Cruyff - as they are famed for their playing career and their coaching. We can also rule out ex-players more famed for their coaching (Hiddink, et al). So to continue with the assumption he is Dutch, an ex-player like Davids could fit the bill.
