Correct! I realize I may have been walking a tightrope on whether or not this is a “song”, but it
has been officially released by Maiden.
Clue #1: A modern-day warrior, mean mean stride.
Line from Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”. A modern-day warrior, or soldier, which brings to mind war, which the speech was written about.
Clue #2: Now I can see the whales!
Line from Gojira’s “Flying Whales”. You might see whales when you’re at the beach. The speech is commonly referred to as “We shall fight them on the beaches”.
Clue #3: Can you feel the madness here? Drawing you all too near…
Line from Iced Earth’s “Iced Earth”. The following line is “Earth, fire, water, and air…” “Churchill’s Speech” refers to elements of water (fight on the seas and oceans), air (with great strength in the air), and land (on the beaches, hills, fields, and streets). The fourth element, fire, is the means by which they will defend the island — with firepower.
Clue #4: Can the end be at hand? Is the face in the sand?
Line from Iron Maiden’s “Face in the Sand”. Sand is usually found at beaches.
Clue #5: Look away, look away, away from the storm; there’s a sadness in your eyes.
Line from British Lion’s “Spit Fire”. The Spitfire was one of the planes Britain used during WWII.
Clue #6: A nation in despair, weakened by war, defeated… lost their pride in Versailles…
Line from Sabaton’s “Rise of Evil”. The song is about Nazi Germany, the land that invaded Britain and prompted Churchill’s speech.
Clue #7: White man came across the sea; he brought us pain and misery.
Line from Iron Maiden’s “Run to the Hills”. The line “we shall fight on the hills” is in the speech.
Clue #8: Before the dawn, the darkest hour.
Line from Iron Maiden’s “Darkest Hour”. The song is about Churchill.
Clue #9: It has been officially released by Maiden four times, five if you count the time it was part of another song.
On three live releases (LAD, F666, NOTD) and one compilation (SBIT). Plus the “Aces High” music video, if you count that.
Your turn!
