GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Pretty easy votes here for me...

Systematic Chaos is not a good Dream Theater album, but it is still better than any post-Dio Rainbow.

Sorry, NP, The Source is amazing and Anaal is...not.

I would never listen to Bolt Thrower, but I'm just sick of thrash.

Sound of White Noise rules. Sabbat is fine. Sound of White Noise is a statement of change by an ingrained thrash band and is far better than any material they've released since.

I'm really torn on the first one. Lesser DT vs lesser Rainbow. I like Rainbow more, I think DT is more interesting, so I think I'll pick Rainbow.
Ayreon, I can't really get through more than a half song of Anaal Nathrakh. Sorry NP.
Motherfucking Bolt Thrower.
Anthrax but it's close.

Okay, so here's some League 10 stats.
The same 2 albums that have hung in since League 17 are still hanging around - Killing Is My Business... and The Real Thing. Their numbers remain unchanged.
League 15 also has two survivors, Gutter Ballet and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. That's down from 3 as we started the league.
League 14 has 3 survivors, same as the previous league.
There are 5 albums from League 13, with only Whoracle being jettisoned in League 10.
League 12 has 6 albums left, 2 lost in the last league.
League 11 also has 6 left, and also lost 2.
There were 8 new albums added in League 10.

Not to mention mine. I reckon all my three albums in this league will be eliminated right away. Metallica and Sabaton have won one round each but that's about it.

Motherfucking Bolt Thrower.
I'm glad Those Once Loyal is getting so much love. It's a masterclass in not only death metal but heavy metal as a whole. If there was a sonic equivalent to what trench warfare sounded like, you could pick any song off Those Once Loyal and it would be it. Anti-Tank Dead Armour might be my favorite but the Killchain has my 3rd favorite riff of all time (2. A Sorcerer's Pledge - Candlemass, 1. Into the Void - Black Sabbath)

I'm listening to it right now and it's still amazing. They could never better it so it remains their swansong - which makes sense t but also a bit sad

Entrenched
The Killchain
Those Once Loyal
Anti-Tank
When Cannons Fade

For Those About to Rock is a far better AC/DC album than Killing is a Megadeth album.

I had a listen to FTATR for the first time in years yesterday and today, and I have to say I've adjusted my opinion on it. It's definitely a better AC/DC album than KIMB is a Megadeth one. The title track is still way better than the other tracks, but the others are all solid 7/8 of 10. Also it's one of the better sounding AC/DC albums whereas KIMB sounds like dogshit. I love that 81/82 sound on the album, and contemporaries Point of Entry and Pyromania, whatever guitar amps were en vogue in those days sounded great.

I voted for FTATR anyway so this doesn't make any difference to the voting.

If Hell Is Empty gets more than 2 votes (me and @Perun for sure, maybe @Diesel 11 surprises me too considering he liked the Powerslave cover), I'll consider it a win.. A fucking masterpiece of extreme metal. A soundtrack to the fucking apocalypse. Musical equivalent of drowning in mud and once in a while getting to breathe a bit before getting submerged again. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

While they probably got even heavier after this album, it's still their most balanced and catchiest album. Easy listening. Production is pretty perfect for AN's standards. Drums are programmed yet it's barely noticeable, probably because it's the best fucking drum programming in metal. Irrumator kicks ass on guitar. I doubt anyone goes past this one song but the album is actually quite melodic in parts. There are some quite Maiden-ish guitar melodies/harmonies in parts, and even the solos are quite good. Obviously first thing that will put off people are the vocals but they aren't supposed to be pretty or intelligible or accessible - after all, they don't release the lyrics and the vocals are meant to be more of an instrument, rather than something that drives the album story/lyric wise. Either way, choruses are all super catchy, obviously the ones with clean vocals the most.

The Final Absolution is IMO the most accessible song on the album, with the best chorus so that's why I picked it. However, I think that the centerpiece of the album is the closer Castigation & Betrayal, which is without a doubt the heaviest song in all of metal ever.

Do yourself a favour and listen to it too:

Anyway, while I really do love Ayreon, I'm not much of a fan of The Source, so easy vote there. Other votes: DT over Dio-less Rainbow, Those Once Loyal (2nd best album in this round and Nuclear Assault should've been gone rounds ago), and Sabbat because I never cared for Anthrax.
I find it hard to be interested in a band when it has the word "anaal" (literal Dutch word for "anal") in its name.

Nat is wet in Dutch. "Anal wet rack", "Wet anal rack". What a shit name.

The band's name is Irish for snake's breath (anál nathrach) and was taken from Merlin's Charm of Making in John Boorman's 1981 film Excalibur.
