Opeth referendum?

I'd be down to host a grunge survivor. Or Grungvivor.

Would it just be single artists or like a mix of songs? My idea is take 20 songs each of them nominated, from each important grunge band then put them against each other.

The bands I'd plan to include:
Nirvana
Alice In Chains
Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Temple of the Dog
Smashing Pumpkins
 
It might be better to open that to 90s alt rock in general. RHCP and Smashing Pumpkins don't really belong in a grunge survivor. If it was 90s alt rock you could also include STP, RATM, Foo Fighters, RHCP, and Smashing Pumpkins among others. That way you also don't have to include boring stuff like Mudhoney. :p
 
I shall raise my hand as one person who will not participate in any survivor that involves Red Hot Chili Peppers. I would not be able to vote without raging bias.

That was a good survivor actually! Even if we were around 4 or 5 steady voters and Collin had to punk us from time to time so that we'd remember to vote.

Honestly, I'm not much for the genre hodgepodge survivors! Much more interesting to go in depth with just one band IMO.

From the stuff mentioned so far and ideas I would be interested in:

King Diamond (had a good amount of interest)
Savatage (also had interest)
Nevermore
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
The Gathering
Tool?

I would also be interested in a a lot of 70s prog that's not Rush (because we've done that one before too many times) but there's many just as good 70s prog rock bands we could try....

And if we do a 70's prog genre survivor, we could maybe do it like War Of Epics...or would that not work? It probably won't but for a genre survivor, I would much rather prefer a tournament style.
 
I'd like to host a prog rock survivor. Not a war of epics because there are a lot of shorter prog songs out there. Gentle Giant, for example, doesn't have any epics.
 
Think the best format for genre survivors would be like NP's short song game. People suggest a certain amount of songs from the genre, host decides which ones fit the criteria and from then on it's the normal survivor game.

Well, I'm all for new survivors for bands we haven't done before. But for example calling something a grunge survivor and just throw the 10 most known bands into it doesn't sound very interesting to me at all...:) (or representative of grunge for that matter :p)

I'd play a Gentle Giant survivor for sure :)
 
But there's no ruling that suggests you can't nominate some obscure grunge track that you love, is there?

It's just hypothetical at this point.
 
I personally like Foro's Dutch Female Fronted Metal game idea the best. It encompasses enough good bands with similar style, no need to widen it to other countries. And no need for Nightwish to participate, it had its own Survivor.

Since Mosh is gonna take up the 5th Survivor spot with Queen (right, @Mosh?), next free Survivor slot will be available after I finish Bruce Dickinson Survivor, which should be in December hopefully. So you guys decide here who wants to take that spot and with which game! :) I think I'll restrict myself to just one Survivor running after I finish Amorphis/DT/Opeth/Sabaton (so that there's more space for others), haven't decided which one, but King Diamond/Mercyful Fate is a strong candidate.

And for the record:

  • Epica - would host but doubt there's enough voters so Foro's idea is better
  • The Gathering - would fit better in Foro's game
  • Blue Oyster Cult - would try to vote but wouldn't host
  • Deep Purple - would try to vote but wouldn't host
  • Uriah Heep - not interested
  • UFO - would try to vote but wouldn't host
  • Jethro Tull - not interested
  • Savatage, Nevermore+Sanctuary, King Diamond+Mercyful Fate - would host
  • genre based games - Swedish Melodeath and Dutch Female Fronted Metal are good ideas, would host the former; would try to vote in Grunge but I only really like Alice In Chains and few Soundgarden and Nirvana songs; 90's alternative has too much stuff I don't like like, so not interested in that; not interested in 70's prog either.
  • Smashing Pumpkins - not interested
  • Tool - would probably vote again, Mosh hosted the last one so he has the rights to it :P
  • Gentle Giant - not interested
  • Van Der Graaf Generator - not interested
And my own suggestions:
  • another Iced Earth Survivor once the new album arrives :D
  • Hypocrisy - melodeath band that I think would be quite accessible to most people here since they are super melodic; lots of albums and changing styles; could also fit them into the Swedish Melodeath game.
  • Mastodon - not sure if they are popular here or not
  • Swallow The Sun - probably don't have fans here, but we didn't have a doom Survivor yet :D
  • Anaal Nathrakh - wishful thinking really, I really love this band but they might be too extreme for Maidenfans :P
  • Dark Tranquillity - also quite accessible melodeath band that can also fit into the Swedish Melodeath game.
  • Helloween, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius - if there are fans of power metal that's not Sabaton :P
  • Satyricon - don't think we had a black metal Survivor yet
  • Paradise Lost - would be good for a n00bvivor
  • bands for the Swedish Melodeath game: At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, early In Flames, Arch Enemy, Hypocrisy etc.

I'd be down for a Tool survivor. The last one was a farce anyway, I also only voted in like the top 3. @Mosh I'd be down to host. The grungevivor is something new at least, if anyone has ideas on how we could make it into a game where we combine all the bands that'd be great.

Sure. Can you put Made In Heaven in the game? Cause SMX didn't, and I think it's worth it just for You Don't Fool Me which is one of my favorite Queen songs :)

Oh and I also forgot to say that there's no point in doing another Tool Survivor without a new album.
