Opeth referendum?

For bands with a smaller following around here, I wonder if there would be some way of staging a genre-based survivor, rather than single-band survivor. It would probably mean someone pre selecting the 'best' music of each band or taking nominations for bands and highlights of their discography. There could be room for something like a symphonic metal survivor. It wouldn't be necessary to know most or all of a band's music, and anyone interested would be introduced to just a taster of music from bands they're less familiar with.

That sounds good to me.

I get the frustration with repeating bands but there aren't very many bands that will have interest from enough people to make these games fun. Survivors with 4 or less people are a major chore to get through.

Anyway, I think we've had a good variety of games lately. Amorphis, Steven Wilson, Alice in Chains, Nightwish, all recent survivors that haven't been done.

It looked like we had a pretty OK group of people who'd be willing to vote in a Savatage, Nevermore or King Diamond survivor for example. Look at page 52 of this thread.

How would you like a Dutch Female Fronted Metal Survivor? These bands do not per se sound very similar (After Forever and Epica the most I guess), but I thought this would a be a good chance to learn more of these bands and their output.

I am thinking of:
Epica
After Forever
The Gathering
Within Temptation
Autumn
Delain
Ex Libris
ReVamp
...and perhaps some smaller groups with just one or a couple of songs.

My wife (a specialist ;) ) is willing to help me with making a selection of songs, but not every band will have the same amount. I esteem that Epica and After Forever will have a greater amount of songs that people could enjoy out here.

I'd be into that, although that is a rather specific category :p
Well, all these bands have females singing (and some bands have grunters/screamers as well), but you'll see that some of them have some pretty progressive/symphonic music. You might like that.

@Mosh the music will be broad enough I think.
If you want a whole genre within metal, I'm afraid there are too many bands to do any of them justice (depending on how many songs will take part). Just my cents.

Ah, from the positive side: this Dutch Female Fronted Metal can do what Brigs suggested. And it's less specific than the average (band) survivor. It is some sort of scene, not without influence. Hope to see you take part!

I've actually heard some Epica, all of After Forever and ReVamp, some Gathering and Within Temptation, and (unfortunately) saw Delain live. Definitely fine with checking out the best of what they have to offer. Well, except for Delain. I really, really dislike her voice.

Limiting it to female-fronted Dutch bands of different genres could narrow it down to voters who already kind of know the bands concerned. Maybe female fronted symphonic? It's a distinct style, and you have a chance of getting people who've heard a bit of Nightwish but don't know much else.

Female fronted symphonic is too much to prepare. As much (or more) as male fronted symphonic. That's more than 30 bands. Or way more if you want to do it thoroughly.

I thought of omitting Nightwish because they are very known and would be distracting. They'd get the votes anyway. And to be honest, I don't see why people who would be interested in what you suggest, won't (per se) be as interested in what I suggest. It's mostly unknown music after all, and if a genre is (slightly) different, or if they won't like it because of that, fine, let people vote accordingly. The opposite could happen as well, a sidestep band could surprise.

The bands I mentioned have hundreds of songs to choose from so it won't sound that narrow.

EDIT:
I am not interested in delving into that whole genre, so I won't do that.
If that means there's no interest (anymore) in what I suggested, so be it.

If we're discussing general, genre-wide survivors, I'd really like the idea of doing a grunge survivor. I think @Collin mentioned something similar earlier in this thread. We could combine Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and perhaps Alice In Chains together into one game.

Or going even more broad, we could do a "90s alternative rock" survivor and include the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Foo Fighters, etc.

Of course just doing a normal survivor of any of these bands is fine by me..:)

I'd definitely participate in a grunge survivor. 70s prog and death metal would be cool too and I think they'd gather around a considerable amount of players.
