Opeth referendum?

I'm starting to get into more Opeth. I know there have been a couple survivors in the past for them. Is there one coming up soon for the new album?

The winner is "Dance of Death", followed by "Paschendale" and "The Book of Souls". Next! ;)

What about a Helloween survivor? (just one or one up to The Dark Ride and one Gerstner-era? or Hansen-Kiske/ Deris eras?)

Helloween survivor sounds great. Although with all the albums.

Okay, I have a maybe completely stupid question, but I still have to ask - what does it actually mean, hosting a surivor? I mean, what do you have to do in general to do so successfully? What are the things connected to it? How many statistics etc. you have to maintain? I never hosted a survivor (though I'd really like to, I'm just afraid), so I'm genuinely curious. :)

I'm asking because I would eventually love to host a survivor too, but I don't know what are the necessities. :)

It's not that hard. You pretty much just have to write the songs down on a piece of paper, make the thread , then promote and eliminate songs accordingly. You don't want too much or too little in the game (like I did) It's generally very easy. The Tournament of Solos like Foro is doing is probably much harder and I couldn't even begin to comprehend how that's set up.

I'm quite thorough when it comes to games here.

For the song list: I check Metal Archives and Wikipedia pages of the band in question so that the song list is complete. Covers are only included if they are part of the album, bonus/non-album covers are not included. All other original studio bonus/non-album tracks are included, so no demos.

For the game running: I keep an excel spreadsheet with results from all the rounds.
Example from Opeth Survivor
This is a bit hardcore tbh, but, as I said, I'm pretty thorough and nerdy when it comes to this stuff :p

If you want to host the game: You'll need to track the results in some way. Non-mods can't edit polls properly so for each round you need to start a new thread, which I then merge with the previous one, with the most recent poll retained. I'm strongly against the option of vote changing (Damn you @Mosh for allowing it in the Maiden game! :p). If you want to host something, post in this thread and I'll find a place for it in the schedule. Schedule is kept so that the subforum isn't overcrowded with games. Other more precise rules for my games

Only the bolded stuff is mandatory, the rest are just suggestions :p However, if you follow my suggestions, you get bonus points in my imaginary book and I'm much more likely to give up the games I wanna host to you :p

All you say sounds pretty reasonable, tbh. :) Even the spreadsheet stuff - I imagine I would do the same if I was hosting.

However, so far the only thing I would feel ready to do would be a Neal Morse/Spock's Beard/Transatlantic/Flying Colors survivor, which 1.) I think someone has already said they would do that, 2.) even if that was not the case, I believe there's not enough fans to do that, and even if it was supposed to be a noobvivor, I don't know whether we would get enough participants. So unless Saap convinces me to host a Satriani survivor, I think I'll wait until I'll think of a good idea for that. :D

However, I still thank you very much for the input - I copied it here on my laptop and I will know what to do in the future :)

I didn't even use a spreadsheet for the best video survivor, just stuck all the results in a Word document. I found my first one pretty easy to run, although I did have the advantage of being able to do the whole game in one thread and change the poll for every round. It's not too daunting a thing to get involved in.

You definitely have it set up a little bit more complex than I do. I keep it simple, here is a picture of what I do. Note that my handwriting is awful and it may be hard to see what I'm doing. But what I'm doing works and it's very easy to do, espicially when you're not working with very many songs.

A thought from a voter. Make your survivor appealing - of course it means a lot what band you choose to make your survivor on - but good introductions to albums/songs entering the game, flow of the game, and the opportunity to discuss stuff in the survivor also matters a great deal. It's pretty easy to spot a good survivor and the so-so ones....:p

Of yourse, album introductions, YouTube links etc., that's understood. I don't think my recently discovered talent for graphomania would allow me to settle for anything less ;)

Does not help if the artist itself is listened to by, like, one and a half people :D

Some really good survivors so far:

Cheesevivor had it's own stlye going for it, with a lot more graphic/images content as well which were good + humerous introductions

SinisterMinister's whole classic rock survivor which was excellent and really had a great idea.

The Current Forostar solo survivor.

However, I guess I still might propose that Neal Morse survivor, because I am completely crazy about the guy and it's one of those preferences that do not go away (I'm sorry, but halfway through the Alice in Chains survivor my period of listening to them and enjoying them kind of faded away - my usual cycles - and I don't know when it'll be back), just like Maiden or Dream Theater or Symphony X.

So, again - a Neal Morse/Spock's Beard (possibly even without him)/Transatlantic/Flying Colors surivor. Everybody might attend even as a n00b, I would make introductions to pretty much every album, I would try to find and post live versions etc., I would discuss those endlessly with all the participants.

If I'd find at least 3 other people (and the person that offered to do that earlier - @Mosh , was that you? - didn't mind), I'd do that gladly. :)

I'm still waiting for someone to do a Marillion survivor, because I guess that would force me to listen to at least half of the new material with h. :D

Schedule plans:
1. I'll probably be hosting Dream Theater into 2017, Opeth should succeed it but might start earlier, depending on my time.
2. I'm hoping to finish Amorphis by October, hopefully earlier. Sabaton will succeed it.
3. Mosh is finishing up Iron Maiden, Stevie Wilson and my Bruce Dickinson game will succeed it.
4. Looks to me like Alice In Chains and Ronnie James Dio games will be done in a month or two, so if you find enough people, you can start your game once both of these are done :ok: I'd try to vote in it. I only know one Transatlantic album though.

I dunno if anyone else has any game plans or if I promised to host something else though :P

Great! I would try to make it as enticing to anyone participating "noobvivor-like" as possible, so don't worry! :) Anyone don't worry! :D
