Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

One of their finest tunes, and I too find the Abbey Road performance phenomenal... Adrian's in particular. Currently in my top 10, and the second favourite tune on my favourite album.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Awesome choice! Actually my 8th favourite from the album though :p Still amazing.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

My favorite from the album, and almost top ten.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Yes great song. A complete masterpiece.  BTATS is a monster of a tune.  Very heavy riffs and Bruce is out of his mind on this one!!  Perhaps Bruce's best performance of the album.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

BTATS deserves all the platitudes it gets. It's just one of those songs that I respect more than love. Currently 49 on my list.

Slotting PFD at 30 and still living to continue your countdown is just evidence of how much respect you have on this board Foro.
I'm still really scared to admit there are three songs ahead of it on my list.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Cheers everybody, nice to read all your takes.

@mckindog:

LOL, don't be scared to do that. Many people have it that high. I realize that PFD is like Hallowed of the 21st century.
BTATS: finally a "popular" song that I have higher than you.  :D

It's #2 on my list, but the rest of my top10 is pretty unusual. I don't withhold the list out of fear, more due to still being pretty new and mostly... I've not got anything more than top10 ranked and I would probably end up bumping some of those around anyway  ;)

Make this list unfold faster Foro  :P Can't throw in unsuspected things and then leave us all to wonder for a week  ;)

No. 28 - Run Silent Run Deep
(Harris/Dickinson, 1990 -> on stage-status: never played)

A few years back I saw the film "Run Silent, Run Deep".

Enjoyable film. I bet Bruce (coincidentally still diving in his mum's belly when the film was released; he was born a few months later) was very inspired, not only for the Maiden track of the same name, but especially for "Dive! Dive! Dive!". I could easily hear the literal sounds he must have used! :)

Now to the song. The gallopping rhythm kicks major obese ass and the chorus actually displays some marvelous variation of the vocals. Bruce sings high and does it pretty good too.

The midpart is the highlight of the song. First Janick's menacing attack (one of his better aggressive solos while the rhythm guitars are almost as slaying) and than Dave follows with his impression of Lawrence of Arabia. When you think you've reached the summum pleasure in the ears, the following harmony is even better.

Pay special attention to 'Arry in the part between the 2nd chorus and the 1st solo. An excellent echo of Bruce's vocal melody in the verses.  :edmetal:

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

It's genuinely quite interesting that you think this better than:

29. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns
30. Paschendale
32. Aces High
33. Isle of Avalon
38. Phantom of the Opera
39. Wasted Years
40. Starblind

Not so sure, although I might agree... no, I can't!  :D

I might even quibble over it sitting higher than some of the, many, 90's tracks that have already made your top 50, like:

31. The Fugitive
34. Fates Warning
35. Judgement of Heaven
41. Public Enema Number One
43. Lightning Strikes Twice
48. Childhood's End
49. Sign of the Cross
50. Fortunes of War

This chart from here down to 20 will be very interesting. Only one track from SiT has featured so far; which I like a lot --unless some of them didn't even make the top 50 at all. Ditto Powerslave. So not all hope is lost!  :P (--& nothing from SSoaSS!)

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Run Silent Run Deep is a great song, my favorite off No Prayer for the Dying and is in my Top 50. Nice choice.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Good song, but not really one of my faves from Maiden.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Excellent song, although I wouldn't commit the blasphemy of ranking it above Paschendale.  :)

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Kudos on putting this list "down to paper" as it were, Forostar. These 'best of' lists with Iron Maiden are tricky for me and I can imagine for you as well because from one day to the next, from one mood to the next, and even from one year to the next I change my mind about my favorites. It is possible, however, to put together a list of Maiden songs that are fairly consistently favorites. Anyway, it's a very interesting list, yours is, it just has a nice mix of things both new and old. And its a bit unorthodox, as in, it differs from both my favorites and from what I think most Maiden fans would go for (I'm thinking Paschendale's placement most notably here).

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your rankings :).

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

run silent run deep.. about mid table for me and definitely below a few youve already placed... but hey still a good song so i wont complain.
Apparitions not next is it?

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

One of the better tracks from the most overrated album on this list ;)
Its got a nice mood and is a solid song, but this is an Iron Maiden top thirty and it just isn't at that level. 110.

I am sorry to say that it will probably go slower from now on. It's getting more difficult.

I won't comment on this yet, to make things a bit more "exciting", so to speak.  :)
Same goes to you, Tron.  :D

Cheers! How high (approx.)?

@Natalie: Hi Nat, nice to see you more active on the board again. Thanks for your nice comment. I also think my ranking shows a nice mix of most (if not all) eras, but more about that in my final analysis (when I have done the whole thing).

No. 27 - Virus
(Harris/Gers/Murray/Bayley, 1996 -> on stage-status: never played)

Maiden's stand alone song with its own independent message in the whole discography.
I do not mind it's not on a regular studio album (and it wouldn't make sense either). It makes this gem (and Best of the Beast!) even more special.

The lyrics of our beloved band hardly got so emotional and angry. I love the instrumental parts with the keyboards, later on. Blaze is really convincing and I especially love his lines "The rats in the cellar, you know who you are" (particularly the last line where he changes the tone in are).

This track has a long and slow intro but the melodies in the rest of the song are way more enthralling than most other Maiden songs with a comparable construction.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

I don't mind virus when it gets going but the length of time it takes to get into it does kinda kill it for me. I can see the appeal in it though, normally I'd be surprised its this high but but not with your list  :P

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

I was in love with Virus for a while...maybe a year or so in fact. It blew me out of the water. It was also during that time when I was really into The X Factor. I can't say I've listened to it in a while, what with Maiden's newest album and the discover of many other bands.

Now that I go back and listen to it again I'm not sure why I ever stopped listening to it...maybe I just played it way too often and somehow it lacks crispness to me now. The part starting at 4:12 still gets to me though. Probably a few years back I would have ranked the song way higher, but with time its kind of settled to somewhere in the middle...but thanks for bringing back my attention to it.

Re: Forostar's Top 50 Iron Maiden songs

Now this is a legitimate top 30 Maiden song.
Outstanding piece of music, my number three Blaze track.
Agree with everything you describe, and just have to add that the slow beginning that turns many off is actually essential to the artistic statement the song is making.
(See my post on the daily song commentary for an explanation.)
I only did album tracks in my rankings, so I don't have a number for this one.
But 18 to 44 includes songs I ranked as nines, and this was a nine.
Off the top of my head, probably between 30 and 35.
