Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum, and this poll caught my attention.
For me, it has to be Brave New World; with Powerslave, Somewhere In Time, Dance of Death, 7th Son, and Piece of Mind just behind it. I prefer more melodic songs to all-out shredfests, so BNW is for me. It also has realtively little filler; the only songs that could probably be so considered are The Fallen Angel and maybe The Mercenary. It has my favorite Maiden epic, Dream of Mirrors, on it; which I prefer more than even Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The Wicker Man is a killer into, Blood Brothers is simply beautiful, Brave New World is a powerful metaphor, Out of the Silent Planet is just badass and a great political statement, Ghost of the Navigator is haunting, and The Thin Line Between Love and Hate is a stunning, beautiful outro to the album, reminicent of Rush.
The only songs I don't really care for are The Nomad {which is still an excellent song}, The Fallen Angel, and The Mercenary.
I guess it's because it's the album that shows the most maturity on it; it takes the blinding NWOBHM found on albums like Piece of Mind and The Number of the Beast and combines it with the great experimentation of Somewhere In Time and SSOASS, and adds the maturity of the Blaze era.
Powerslave ranks right behind it; almost its equal. Two of my favorite heavy metal songs of all time, Aces High and Two Minutes To Midnight, are found on that album; along with the incredible title song and the chilling Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
SSOASS is another of my favorites; I love the storyline behind the album, and songs like The Clairvoyant, The Evil That Men Do, Moonchild, and Can I Play With Madness are staples of my metal/rock library.
Somewhere In Time is another killer album. The Lonliness of the Long-Distance Runner and Stranger In A Strange Land are some of my favorite songs of the eighties.
It's so hard to pick a single best IM album. I love their first two albums because they were so raw and gritty, and I can even appreciate the Blaze Bailey era. I'm a big fan of Candlemass, Type O Negative, and bands like that; so I do really like the X Factor, although it doesn't come close to comparing to some of their earlier stuff.
The only albums I really DON'T consider to be great are NPFTD, FOTD, and Virtual XI, and had those been albums from any other band, they'd be amongst the greatest. Also, I'm honestly not a big fan of TNOTB other than 22 Acacia Avenue, the title track, Run To The Hills, and Hallowed Be Thy Name; but it's still an incredible album.
So BNW gets my vote; although ALL Iron Maiden albums are so excellent that there's no real way to pick one over the other.
