And the way we prefer to have to have words like centre, theatre, etc. spelt with an re.
 
I blame the invasion of France on English's current spelling. "Enough", "Though" The hell is that! why can't you people have a phonetic language like German or Spanish :p

A favourite phrase of my old French teacher as we complained at how hard French was to learn:

"OK", he would say, "try to teach a non-English speaking person how to pronounce ough using this sentence - The farmer thought he ought to plough his land through as it looked a bit rough". :huh:

I believe the reference to "invasion of France" is the Norman invasion of 1066. The Norman kings continued to speak French for quite a while after that, and through their influence a large number of French-derived words entered the English language.
 
Another one my old French teacher would say is:

Imagine you are on a train, and the door window is open and a Frenchman is looking through it. You see a train coming at speed in the opposite direction and to stop a potential injury to this Frenchman, you say "Look out" and point to the train. At this point the Frenchman sticks his head out the window too look out, and......

Granted, this does rely on the Frenchman to take your words literally.

Getting back to Maiden and singing songs that are patriotic to England, I was listening to the Chemical Wedding and thought that the track Jerusalem* is possibly the closest Bruce has ever come to singing patriotically. I realise that this was not his intention at all, but he would not be that ignorant of knowing what the song means to quite a lot of us English. It is one of the favourites to be the English national anthem (not Bruce's version mind, but that would be pretty good as well)  - rather than the borrowed God Save the Queen. Personally, the original Jerusalem hymn would be my second favourite anthem behind Manowar's "Hail to England." :D


*(And yes, it wasn't Maiden but Bruce - but so what!)
 
Not to mention that the melody of God Save The Queen is the same as the Liechtenstein national anthem and the old German imperial hymn (Heil Dir Im Siegeskranz).
 
Maybe it's a sign that I listen to too much rock music when you guys mention "God Save The Queen" and the first version I think of is the Sex Pistols song, not the traditional one.

Funny you should say that, but as I was typing it in I couldn't quite fathom out if the title was right or not as all I could hear in my head was the Sex Pistols one.
