That's not unusual, there are a lot of "great" or "good" bands I could care less about. Rush, Anthrax, Slayer, Judas Priest... to name a few. Just never got into them.

True Schaffer has stated many times Maiden is what gave him musical direction, but I think he meant it as far as Metal went, but not what type of metal. I would NEVER call Maiden Thrash, but I will call IE that without thinking twice. the whole "galloping" rythem section is there, but that's as far as it goes. Not to mention countless bands have done that, from Avenged Sevenfold to Sonata Arctica to name some recent ones.

Aside from waving the Union Jack in concerts there is nothing "patriotic" about Maiden's Music. Iced Earth on the other hand has blatant "I love America" songs like the Ghost of Freedom and that piece of shit called When the Eagle Cries. Maiden doesn't have a single "Go UK' or " Go England" song.

I agree with the other stuff though.

I have argued this before when people write about Maiden having songs patriotic to England (the last.fm bio for Maiden is a case in point). So name one, I say and they can't - then they sort of um and ah about Aces High!

Alright, I'm gonna play some devil's advocate. How about "These Colours Don't Run"?

Remember the Ozzfest thing? I do, because I was talking about at work today with a truck driver who saw my awesome Piece Of Mind shirt and started talking Maiden with me. And as I recall it, they were playing "The Trooper", with Bruce waving the Union Jack and all that, when Sharon Osbourne cut the power, and when it came back Bruce yelled "these colours don't run". (I had to debate the spelling on that one, because on the one hand he's English which means he spells 'colors' wrong, but on the other hand he was in the US where we spell 'colors' right.)

And we all know that from there, it was a predetermined fact that Maiden would record a song with that title. But because of the Ozzfest Trooper thing, that song is forever associated with an Englishman waving the Union Jack. Plus the song mentions something about fighting for your country, and since Bruce is English that country would have to be England.

So there's one "go fight and die for your country, which is England" song for you.

If I had a point, I've forgotten what it was. :ok:

My nick is connected to the song "22 Acacia Avenue" from The Number Of The Beast album by Iron Maiden. Also, notice my avatar, which is a clever allusion to the fact that acacia is also a type of thorny tree, usually loved by bees.

Sorry gentlemen, you can get back off topic now :P

Although you're correct in regards to the background, the very first line of that song already makes every specific patriotic interpretation impossible:
It's the same in every country...

:innocent:

correct !

two more things :
1) acacia, originally means "thorn" and is in female gender
2) its wood is precious and hard enough for the use of ship's shafting system (bearings)

But then your interpretation of that line would mean "this song applies to no one". I take that line to mean "this song applies to everyone, everywhere" - which would include Iron Maiden and England.

Right, but patriotism refers to the promotion of one country over all others.  Since Maiden has lumped England in with all other countries in These Colours Don't Run, it can't be patriotism.

And Americans spell colour wrong.  The British manner of spelling was first.  The Americans changed it so they could pretend to be different.

Oh, we don't pretend, we are different.

We even spell 'check' properly.  No reason to use the 'Q' anymore than absolutely necessary!
