European Politics

I'm all for idealism, discussing differing thoughts and democracy. But with all things concerned in the current political climate across the globe, I really feel a certain way: I truly feel like we're approaching a point where it may be Us Against Them. Us being the sane, peace loving, open-minded people and them being people filled with bigotry, hatred and close-mindedness. Liberals, conservatives, social democrats, libertarians, whatever. We have differing sets of ideals on fiscal and social policies. But there are people who are just batshit crazy and so woefully uneducated that our differences seem almost irrelevant in the current status of things. -And I hate that I feel like educated differences and ideals are being hindered as such-

Maybe I feel this way because it's certainly the story in the country that I live but with the Middle East being as fucked as it is, rising far-right in Europe and Donald fucking Trump being one of the main candidates for US Presidency, I can't help but feel it's universal. There has been many periods in history where certain regions drowned in ignorance, bigotry and hatred. But never it has been as influential universally as it is right now, I believe, and it's getting stronger and stronger.

It always has indeed, to some extent. But what's concerning at the current state of affairs is that we all feel like "It's going to get worse.". Or at least that's what I gather from what I observe.
You make a good point that the view for Turkey is different from the view from elsewhere ... so maybe you are right ... but still if you look at the state of the world , in general, it is better now that it was 25, 50, 100 years ago in most ways and the overall trend will probably continue that way.. but nothing is a straight line and there are always dips. Call me an optimist, but we have come a long way since I was in school and we had "what if the Russians nuke us" fears .. which in hindsight were probably over played, but at the time a fear for sure. Anything short of "the world will be destroyed" is an improvement :)

I think it comes down to the periods you set. World is definitely better than it was 25, 50, 75 or 100 years ago. But I don't think it's better than it was 10 years ago, for example. After Cold War, the world didn't stop having a lot of issues but we did go through a relatively better period. Call me a pessimist, but I feel like we're in the build up stage of total chaos and war.

I see your point, but the world is never going to stop having issues .. the issues will change. Also, I think the end of 2 powers with their fingers on the trigger of weapons that could wipe out the whole planet is a pretty major accomplishment. Again, going to perspective, half of Europe consisting of essentially puppet states and eliminating that is a pretty major change as well.

But, in the grand scheme of things 10 years is really nothing. But in those 10 years, you can point to some stuff being better and certainly some being worse and that will all vary based on someone's opinion of what is better and what is worse and locale certainly plays into it as well.

To edit .. I wanted to add that I totally see your point and if I were your ago in your location I would probably say the same thing. Conversely, if you were in my circumstances, you would probably say what I am saying. I think it is interesting to discuss stuff like this, where there is no right or wrong answer. I certainly hope things get better there, I am no expert on Turkey by any stretch, but recent events are certainly problematic to say the least.

Foreign ministers from the EU's six founding nations are meeting in Berlin. The six countries attending the talks in Berlin - Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - first joined forces in the 1950s and still form the core of the EU. They will consider the process and speed of Britain's exit, and are also likely to discuss how to dissuade others from doing the same.

I hear talk about the idea of making two groups of nations: one who wish to collaborate more, and one for less.

Croatia has a state energy company called INA ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INA_(company) ). Throughout several batches of privatization Hungarian energy company called MOL ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOL_Group ) acquired 47% of shares, but even from the time when they had only 7% of shares MOL was forming executive boards because the official stance from our side was, they're more experienced, we will benefit from it, etc. What we've seen from their decisions only brings Hungary profit. Our ex government ('socialist') wanted to take control, which is right, because we still own the majority, resulting in a international dispute (google ina-mol arbitrage). The current, impeached, 'technical' government, when they took the cabinet, right-wing nut Karamarko (1st deputy pm) forced us out of the arbitrage process and wanted to take charge of the secret services and internal control forces. He's just a dumbass full of corruption affairs so it rang all alarm bells and suddenly documents leaked showing MOL executives (his personal friends), paying half a million of euros to a company of his wife for 'design and branding purposes'. Her company is obviously a fraud screen cause she's no recognized designer, and the government was impeached.

This is just a bit. Basically all our major politicians and political forces are sponsored from outside and are out there to sell our land and belongings to their corporate masters. There will be no charges for multi billion damages for MOL's racketeering operation. This is a sorry state.
