European Politics

Germany recognizing the events of 1915 as genocide created -as you'd expect- a shitstorm in Turkey. This is one of the few topics that you can find people of almost all political views gather around in one common idea here. Too bad it's the wrong one.

Some very funny arguments though. I saw one guy saying "Germany is just trying to cover up the Holocaust by trying to make up companions." And some brilliant nationalist classics like "Europe hates us because we fucked them in the ass!!!"

The only thing that gives me joy now about the almost inevitable Brexit vote is the thought of Johnson, Duncan-Smith, Gove and Farage in a tugboat flowing down the River Styx. Unfortunately, they'll be tugging the entire country with it.

I don't know how many of you are aware that Croatia doesn't actually have a government since December. Cabinet was formed from coalition between right-wing parties and independents, who didn't want right wingers to take control of key positions such as police/media control and opted for business/technocratic non-political figures to be present in the gov't, like our PM.

However the three sides started immediate fights and now we have a dysfunctional government. They don't even schedule open, proper cabinet meetings any more. It's just clan talk between closed doors. Right wingers say that they have enough votes in the parliament to form gov't themselves, but they've been just talk no action for some time. They're the main problem, 'cause naturally, they've been caught deep into fraud and corruption as soon as they smelled return to power, plus the key positions they wanted to ensure from the coalition, would only act as showstopper for state revision/state crime agencies investigating into their affairs.

But it's all roses to me. Our PR and ratings are going up because we actually have a working civil society that does actual bussiness. Also, there isn't anyone sitting up there currently and putting up signatures that will bring debt to my future child, or making laws that are only used to racket working class for their tax money and decreasing overall spending. These gov't leeches are only stealing people's money.

(I still strongly adhere to my left believes but this top-level government limo riding yuppies need to go down the drain)

The hubris of Britain believing they can maintain their relevance without the EU is staggering. Churchill is spinning in his grave.

In the UK, LabourMP Jo Cox has been murdered by a man who allegedly shouted "Britain First!" as he shot and stabbed her. For people like this, the UK will leave the EU.

Looks like a lone nutter at the moment, armed with an 'old' gun and a handmade weapon. Most MPs don't have a tremendous amount of security around at ward surgeries, only Government ministers and one or two with especially controversial views. This was pretty much in my area, and has seriously shaken people up around here. I haven't seen official confirmation that the attacker shouted 'Britain First', but if he did, I can see the authorities' views towards BF changing dramatically. They've already been in trouble for marches in military-style uniform, organising self-appointed 'patrols' in multicultural areas where a lot of Muslims live, and a newspaper has just claimed that they've been holding training camps for activists. At this rate they could be on the brink of being considered terrorists.

There are actually people on the alt-right calling it a false flag attack. Fucking retarded, the lot of them.

And Britain First make the EDL and BNP look like mild-mannered socialists.

EDL is still as nasty as ever, we just don't hear as much from them. One of them was boasting on FB about his role in the alleged Battle of Walthamstow recently. A load of EDL turned up to disrupt a fairly harmonious multicultural community, and got into a fight with police and antifascists (who are usually anarchists). A lot of them seem to have cross membership with smaller paramilitary organisations, too, including ones that diversify into homophobia and antisemitism.

It isn't. We were comparing them to Britain First. A witness on TV has just said he heard the guy shout "Britain First" as he attacked her.

The BBC is reporting that the witness heard the guy shout "put Britain first"; they have yet to make any link with Britain First the organisation. Is the link being made elsewhere?

The EDL is actually an interesting story; it wasn't originally formed to be against all forms of Islam, rather against the radical approaches that were destroying communities in the Luton area. However, the cause got hijacked by the alt-right and has become another populist cesspool.

Having listened to an interview with the man, I don't think Tommy Robinson is necessarily a racist, I just think his cause was far too easy to manipulate into a xenophobic one.

I heard an interview with one witness. He wasn't 100% sure if the attacker shouted Britain First or put Britain first. Hence police still investigating. What I said was if they do find any link to Britain First, even something like the attacker - who has a history of mental illness and an interest in far-right politics - being influenced by BF's campaigns and social media soundbites, it'll seriously change the way the authorities look at the group. Their campaigning is irresponsible and open to interpretation by anyone who fancies jumping on a bandwagon. BF has put out a video statement on it.

With a name like English Defence League, it smacks of being about extreme nationalism from day one. It sounds like he's just trying to distance himself these days.

It actually wasn't originally known as the EDL, it was something to do with Luton, and it was more a local issue thing than anything (IIRC, the local council basically gave money to an extremism Salafi mosque).

Full interview is here if any of you are interested in it:

His reasoning is very anecdotal, but not necessarily racist.

A lot of what he says is correct. I don't know of his background but he didn't strike me as a racist either.

I tend to agree with the conservatives of Europe on a lot of things regarding Middle Eastern immigration to Europe, honestly. Treating all Middle Eastern people as terrorists/extremists is racist behaviour which can't be condoned but I think it's very reasonable to be concerned about the non-integration of Middle Eastern Muslim communities in Europe. The influence of Islam is, indeed, a threat on Europe. Europe thrived because they shook off the influence of the Church. The percentage of Muslims who are not particularly secular to Christians who are not particularly secular is remarkably higher. "li" is the difference here. It's not the religion per se, it's the region. Christianity and Judaism would be just as dangerous in the same region if they were to replace Islam. Middle East is a toxic region that's filled with ignorance, lack of education, hatred of West and money going into the hands of the extremists. (The West deserves a lot of the blame for the latter two)

I think the middle ground is usually lost. You have racists who claim all Middle Easterners are extremists, xenophobes who flat out hate Muslims and Middle Eastern people, and then you have people who get mad that the more skeptical Europeans are asking for very strict background checks for Middle Eastern immigrants and SJWs who spew the word "Islamophobe" against anyone who criticises Islam or Muslim countries. Secular people who live in the Middle East are more scared of the radical Muslims and extremists than anyone else in the world is. They will be the first ones to tell you that a lot of the European concern about immigration is well placed. Because while these guys are the minority among Muslims, there aren't just a few of them. There are A LOT of them. Enough of them around me that I'm scared when I take the subway, enough of them to be skeptical about people in my campus. And all of them are very dedicated to their "cause". Extremists by nature are, but radical Muslims, although not in an "in your face" way, are also very dedicated. And they tend to have a lot of common ground with the extremists.

I hope that my perspective is at least respectable as a non-religious person living in a Middle Eastern country with its population made up of at least %90 Muslims and governed by Islamists.

Fully agreed.
P.S. Each time I remember that you are a left atheist Turk, living in Turkey today, makes me a bit uncomfortable. Stay safe mate

I intensely hate certain conservative people in Turkey....

Some youth listen to the new Radiohead album, and drink some beer. Then a crew with with sticks and bottles enters. Strongly religious men who won't accept that the guys drink beer during Ramadan. Eating and drinking during Ramadan is not forbidden by law in Turkey

I don't have a good feeling about the Gay Pride this week.
