The clip of him going crazy on the new album CDs that comes on right after Petrucci talks about the drummer's nice personality is golden.

Mike Mangini was probably right for DT in the long run + he fit in so well.

But second runner up Marco Minnemann is awesome! Check out the improvised ending..Fuuuck.

Yeahhh Minnemann is awesome. Not saying that Mangini isn't - but they felt more comfortable with Mangini I guess. He has the character/persona look too, he can just step right into a band the size of DT and look good on stage/photo shoots etc - + he worked with LaBrie before on his solo albums so I suppose it was a matter of knowing that you get a dude you like being around (like how Steve picked Blaze)

Minnemann had by far the best audition out of anyone. What's the point of having an audition if you knew you'd hire Mangini all along?
Publicity. Those audition videos gave the band a lot of positive attention. With all the Portnoy drama going about, it was smart for them to turn all that extra attention into good publicity.

I like Aquiles Priester's drumming in Angra. I remember being shocked when I saw the auditions, when it became clear the guy can't improvise at all. He's amazing at executing practiced parts, but that's it.

I have read somewhere that they actually did choose Minnemann at first... That's why his phone call isn't in the videos. However they found out he knew only those three songs by them, that he didn't listen to them all that much and when told the management would frown upon side projects, he decided to decline the offer (as he was somewhat more interested in The Aristocrats than DT). Allegedly, either him or Jordan (they seem to be friends) have said so. Does anyone know whether this is true?

That's a dick move to the other drummers.

I have heard something along those lines too, that he didn't have a sufficiently bootlicking attitude... he had personality, which conflicted with Petrucci's plans. Hopefully, being as charismatic as a washcloth made Mangini land the job :)

Honestly, this band has become a joke: while Mike Portnoy is still making music, all they seem to do is "developing a brand" (hence this public audition, as worthy as real TV). To be fair, it started long before Portnoy's departure (in my opinion, Train of Thought was a failure after a good album and it kept on going downward after that). Not to mention the production of the self-titled album...

I am a huge fan of the 1992-1998 period though, and though I like SFAM a lot, I think this is when they started to get redundant.

Actually, I'll have to dig up some interviews but I definitely remember at least two or three drummers who came in weren't actually serious about joining the band, they just wanted to be part of the audition process.

And idk about you guys, but the only two drummers who auditioned that I could seriously picture in DT were Mangini and Minneman.

I disagree about it being a waste of time anyway. They still got to jam with DT and it sounded like it was a fun process for everyone involved. On top of that, I think it's good for any musician to go through an audition process semi-frequently, it's always a good learning experience even if you're not serious about whatever the audition is for. I'm sure a lot of those guys came out of it with a better understanding of where they stood on their instrument compared to others of similar caliber. It probably inspired them to continue improving.

I agree. But I still consider it a dick move to act like there was a decision to be made if Mangini was the pick all along.

The extreme metal guy at least - if he was serious, you don't drop blast beats in there. Also I think Virgil Donati knew he wasn't joining.

Yea there are definitely some you can tell just by watching the audition that there was no way they were serious contenders and I think even those drummers probably knew that. There were also some (Minneman may have been one actually) who declined the invitation to join upfront but agreed to audition anyway.
