Dream Theater

I wish, for at least one album, Jordan Rudness didn't play any solos and instead played only to add texture and ambience. They are supposed to be progressive, so why don't they do something like that?

What I'd love even more is an album with no keyboards. I think that would be amazing.

I never minded Pinnella's lead sound. I think it far surpasses Rudess's.

It's funny that over the years, Dream Theater kept their keyboard solos while Symphony X has reduced them. This is the opposite of what I wanted to happen.

I loved Iconoclast. Never considered lack of keys as a possible reason why. Interesting.

Jordan is an experimenter. Sometimes we get Octavarium, sometimes we get iPhone solos. Letting him play is worth the risk.

I thought DT12 was pretty light in the keyboard departments. He barely had any solos compared to other albums. The bulk of it was very guitar driven. I liked hearing JR in a less up front role though.

I liked Iconoclast a lot when it came out but it hasn't aged too well. Still some stand out tracks, but a lot of average material as well.

I agree that DT12 was far more guitar-driven, which may be why I liked it more. What I'd like to hear from Jordan is more atmospheric, background stuff, like in the song Forsaken. Great song with minimal wank.

Iconoclast actually had more keyboard than Paradise Lost, but the album just wasn't as strong. Perhaps it was the digital theme from a band that is so strongly associated with mythology? I'm not certain. Still, I'd put songs like the title track, Heretic, Prometheus (I Am Alive), Reign in Madness, and even Dehumanized up there as some of the best "modern" Symphony X. I'm very excited to hear the new album, as the tracks revealed thus far have been more melodic than practically all of Iconoclast.

Agreed on both accounts, though I'd say Dehumanized and End of Innocence are up there with the best of SX period.

As for DT, they seem to stick to only one mood: if the song is wanky, the keyboard will be wanky. If the keyboard is atmospheric, the entire song is atmospheric and we're left with more Octavarium bird noise crap. Why can't they write dynamic songs on guitar while still having atmospheric keyboard? DT12 was certainly a step in the right direction, though. I hope to hear more like that.

And shortly thereafter the first law of Internet humour was laid down: if a joke isn't funny the first time, it just might be the hundredth time.

Did you know John Myung wrote the lyrics to Dance of Eternity?
