Do we have any public information about that? So far I've only seen Nicko say positive things about Simon, as well as a bit of bantering.I am not sure anymore. There have been a few decisions recently where I would have said, ‘That is atypical, that is not Maiden.’
Do you think Nicko’s opinion of Simon’s performance is influencing Steve?
I think nobody apart from people here are against Simon being in the band. If anyone who havent listened to maiden before goes to an IM show would see a great band.Do we have any public information about that? I don`t think it`s just people who haven`t listened to Maiden before who will see a great band. Anyone who likes Maiden will see a great band , just an older and understandably different version of the band. Just use a bit of common sense and a cut them a bit of slack when seeing them live now and all is good.I think nobody apart from people here are against Simon being in the band. This. The internet is filled with people lamenting artists for not looking and sounding as well as they did 20, 30 or 40 years ago. It's ridiculous, because they somehow expect these people to be ageless and thus they don't view the artists through an appropriate lens.I don`t think it`s just people who haven`t listened to Maiden before who will see a great band. Funny you mention Simon Phillips - I was thinking he would have been a great drummer in Maiden, at least had the right size kit for it! ( I don't mind Simon Dawson at all, but I did feel his playing lacked explosiveness which is the term I can think of for Nicko's playing)I'd like to think that's only a rumour with nothing to it. But that said, we know that the band is following Rush and know what they did. It's also likely that at least Adrian and Bruce are seeing them in the US this year (Leana posted a story during the first few nights of the Rush tour that she can't wait to see them and Alex is always Adrian's guest during Toronto shows).
But if it's true, they should go all in and hire Simon Phillips.
This is solid logic, but I don't think anyone in the band is currently at the top of their game. The only argument that could be made is for Adrian, who is the only member of the band who has continued to evolve and learn new things throughout their career. Some would reasonably argue that:
- Steve
- Nicko
- Dave
- H
…. Are musically at the top of their game, and that Janick and Simon are great but not at the very top of their game compared to the core 4 above (great though they are with Janick bringing other key things esp live and in his songwriting).
I have some sympathy with that view but would also suggest that once the 4 core musicians had made maiden what it is musically in the 80s, not overly upsetting that formula has also been a priority.
In other words I could not see maiden hiring any kind of stand alone virtuoso or someone who could challenge the band’s foundations, or attempt a forced evolution.
‘Fitting in’ has clearly been very important too. When I look at the mess other long standing bands get in to with members I can see the logic here in hiring a ‘good soldier’ type.

Everyone in the band is currently doing as well as they possibly can for guys in their late 60s/70. So getting a drummer who could meet them there without demanding what they can no longer give was probably a big part of Steve's thinking (if subconsciously only).
Did you hear Dave on the last tours? This is solid logic, but I don't think anyone in the band is currently at the top of their game. The only argument that could be made is for Adrian, who is the only member of the band who has continued to evolve and learn new things throughout their career.

Yep, and he sounds good! My comment in no way meant that any of them are playing poorly. But I don't think arguing that Dave's current playing is "the top of his game" is accurate.Did you hear Dave on the last tours?
I think Dave is playing better than since SBiT. Might be biased because it is recently played, but that is what it comes off as to me.Yep, and he sounds good! Not retiring soon but for sure maiden wont be there if they live show sucks. And for me they are still one of the greatest. But i see them doing 2 or 3 more tours. Thats all. But who knows bruce is 66 and i saw him the first part of the show like 2006 maybe. But i dont see them for 10 years more.I don't understand why Maiden is always viewed so much more pessimistically than other bands. For example,
how many people were convinced that they would retire soon, even though that's hardly discussed with other “old” bands
(that are much less energetic live).
Or the idea that they didn’t want a super-talented drummer so as not to push their current abilities too hard. Clearly, no Rush member saw this as a problem. But with Maiden, we should assume that's the case.
