DAWSON 1 YEAR ON

I am not sure anymore. There have been a few decisions recently where I would have said, ‘That is atypical, that is not Maiden.’
Do you think Nicko’s opinion of Simon’s performance is influencing Steve?

I don`t think it`s just people who haven`t listened to Maiden before who will see a great band. Anyone who likes Maiden will see a great band , just an older and understandably different version of the band. Just use a bit of common sense and a cut them a bit of slack when seeing them live now and all is good.

This. The internet is filled with people lamenting artists for not looking and sounding as well as they did 20, 30 or 40 years ago. It's ridiculous, because they somehow expect these people to be ageless and thus they don't view the artists through an appropriate lens.

That doesn't mean one have to put blinders on and pretend everything is awesome and that Axl Rose is kicking ass, but rather adopt a more pragmatic view.

I'd like to think that's only a rumour with nothing to it. But that said, we know that the band is following Rush and know what they did. It's also likely that at least Adrian and Bruce are seeing them in the US this year (Leana posted a story during the first few nights of the Rush tour that she can't wait to see them and Alex is always Adrian's guest during Toronto shows).

But if it's true, they should go all in and hire Simon Phillips.

Funny you mention Simon Phillips - I was thinking he would have been a great drummer in Maiden, at least had the right size kit for it! ( I don't mind Simon Dawson at all, but I did feel his playing lacked explosiveness which is the term I can think of for Nicko's playing)
 
Some would reasonably argue that:
- Steve
- Nicko
- Dave
- H

…. Are musically at the top of their game, and that Janick and Simon are great but not at the very top of their game compared to the core 4 above (great though they are with Janick bringing other key things esp live and in his songwriting).

I have some sympathy with that view but would also suggest that once the 4 core musicians had made maiden what it is musically in the 80s, not overly upsetting that formula has also been a priority.

In other words I could not see maiden hiring any kind of stand alone virtuoso or someone who could challenge the band’s foundations, or attempt a forced evolution.

‘Fitting in’ has clearly been very important too. When I look at the mess other long standing bands get in to with members I can see the logic here in hiring a ‘good soldier’ type.
 
The idea of Maiden getting rid of Simon is just pure nonsense, based on nothing. The Rush connection??? Rubbish. Steve doesn't give a shit about what others do. He just wants to play and be in a very confortable environment. He does get along very well with Simon, both musically and personnaly, which is obvious since 2013 and their first tour. I know most people don't like BL, but I've seen them a lot of times, and several times, being exactly centre front, I could only hear the rythm section and the singer, and I can assure you they are extremely tight.
In case you didn't notice the obvious, Steve is really trying to get at peace with the past and with what could have been labelled bad behaviour towards former members. Touring with Doug Sampson, Tony Moore, reconnecting with Dennis Stratton, even paying a visit to Paul DiAnno. The man will certainly not sack a friend again.
Simon does the job, which Nicko couldn't anymore. Comparing him to Simon Philips is insulting. And I assume that his arrival has renewed the band's enthousiasm. If he allows them to play two more years, I praise him even more.
