Coronavirus

Very positive news from the human trials of the Oxford vaccine. It can train the immune system by triggering it to make antibodies and white blood cells.

Not so positive news about the Oxford vaccine now.

It could be a flash in the pan. Apparently there was another adverse reaction before now, and we don't know how many people it's been tested on now, it could be hundreds or even into thousands. There are always some adverse reactions to drugs and vaccines.

Meanwhile the village where I grew up now has 37 Covid cases confirmed from one single pissup - quite impressive. The nearest town also has 30 cases, most likely a result of the same event. I'm advising the parents to stay in as much as possible and not go to the cramped local pubs and restaurants. It's a really small population.

This was my first week back to work. We started classes virtually and only a handful of majors that have to do in person practices will go back to in-class format sometime in October. I have to admit... I'm enjoy it. I'm still not a fan of online classes, but my GF and I have gotten into a really good routine. I've been making videos of the lessons for the students and putting them up on Youtube, then during our sessions we just go over the exercises and I answer questions, this allows me to sleep a little longer in the morning and to do chores around the house. I take out my dogs for a quick morning stroll, my GF and I have breakfast together, she cooks I clean, after our 10am classes we clean the house or do laundry and we watch a movie before our afternoon classes. Then I record more lessons and we take the dogs out for their afternoon walk and come back to spend more quality time together. Therefore, thus far, no complaints. Once I need to start grading that might change, but for now, it's been great. Speaking of which, off to put the laundry on the clothes line.

The village my family live in is going to end up featuring in various studies at this rate. There are now 61 coronavirus cases resulting from one single event.

It might be hard to beat Ischgl, which seems to have played a significant part in the initial spread of the virus...

Oh very likely to be small fry compared to some places, but a bummer in a back-of-beyond village which had very few cases in March-May time. Then someone threw a party.

A friend at work agreed to take part in Coronovirus surveillance and took an antibody test. It came back positive. He thinks it must have been the mild week-long bug with a slight fever, headache, and tiredness he caught in April. He doesn't have much contact with people, so it's likely he either caught it at work or on a bus travelling to or from work. It was a complete surprise to him that he tested positive, but he did say he's been having problems with his sense of taste and smell

Meanwhile my parents are going to be under lockdown from midnight tonight. Probably for the best, because infection rates are running out of control across the most densely populated bit of the North East.

I’d at least be shocked if no one‘s had a “quarantiñera” party yet...
Unfortunately those have been had. My neighbors directly across the street have parties twice a week... On weekdays. Doesn't bother me, but I feel sorry for the folks next door to them.

Had I gotten a cat during the restrictions in spring, I think I would've named her Corona. (Where could I have gotten one from, a policeman said on tv about dogs that people should leave their new puppy to be with its mom, and fetch it after the restrictions are lifted.)
