My votes:

I quite like this Bowie song, but the round's top seed is again a juggernaut. More Than A Feeling
Billy Joel goes prog! His best song. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
More Petty. It never stops. Not this time. Waterloo Sunset
I hate the Zevon song with a fiery passion. The CCR being great is just a bonus. Proud Mary

I think Tom Petty is our new sacrifical lamb. Sorry, ELO. I know you wanted to be it. At least there's still Mr. Blue Sky, right?

I have no idea why "More Than a Feeling" is seeded this high, but it's decent enough.
"Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" has some neat parts.
"Waterloo Sunset" is one of the ten or so greatest pop songs ever.
Little Proud Mary got mutilated late last night... I kinda want to vote for Zevon because I like him and this is likely the only time he'll appear, but the CCR song is better.

Only pairing that merits mention here is "American Girl" vs. "Waterloo Sunset." Both are fantastic. Shadow isn't wrong when he says the latter is one of the greatest pop songs ever written. But so is "American Girl." Both are pretty much perfect. So it's hard to choose. If you told me I could never listen to one of them again, I'd be more bummed out if that one was "American Girl."

Plus, it was featured in a key scene in one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

Yeah, Petty has been getting his share of hate in this game. I get that American roots-rock thing isn't some people's cup of tea, but the guy can just write songs.

He had some hits in Europe as well, but the quantity of (other) songs in this game is nothing short of ridiculous. No offense to the game, I find so much airplay (of which this game is a representation) ridiculous. No Child in Time + a zillion Tom Petty = bad taste.

He can re-write his songs. So often that same meter:

lol:
I don't understand the appeal of this guy. His music is like a B movie--it's dull and generally un-entertaining, but sometimes achieves cult-like status. How he managed to have a career spanning 35 years is baffling to me.

Classic rock stations fucking play his "hits" to death-- Free Fallin' may very well be the most overplayed song in history. The only song of his which I thought was marginally decent is Runnin' Down A Dream, thanks to the guitar riff. Everything else of his is sleep-inducing, my personal cure for insomnia. For that, I thank him.

Anyone want to debate this? I don't think a debate is necessary, for I am 100% correct.

That article has a curious obsession with number one records. Don't they know how easy it is to have a number one record?

As for Petty, I would imagine his songs are radio staples precisely because they're pretty and inoffensive. Personally I'd rather have him than Foreigner or Bon Jovi or even The Eagles.

Did you find that link on my wall again, Foro?

I've preferred most of the Tom Petty songs out of the pairings they've been in. He's not an artist that grabs me all that much, but I find his music pretty solid. There's always one band/artist whose songs end up appearing in droves in survivors, be it Tom Petty, Satriani, or Rush.

Edit: no, that's not my link, mine had Rush in it as well. :p

I actually think he is a bit underrated. If you don't like his style of music -- blues-based American guitar rock -- then so be it. But you know his hits, which are part of the American music canon. "American Girl," "Breakdown," "Here Comes My Girl," "Even the Losers," "Refugee," just to name a few of my favorites -- all essential standards. Damn the Torpedoes and his solo (non-Heartbreakers) Full Moon Fever are perfectly-crafted albums. His secret weapon is Mike Campbell, an underrated guitarist who (I think) has played with him on everything. I agree that he doesn't evoke the near-religious fervor that guys like Dylan and Springsteen do, perhaps because his lyrics are not as poetic, but he's a much better tune-crafter than those guys.

Remember that this game has 512 songs, and a stretch of several days with a Petty song doesn't actually mean he's the most common...

Rolling Stones - 20
Led Zeppelin - 19
Beatles - 17
Pink Floyd - 13
Van Halen - 13
Petty, Tom - 11
U2 - 11
Aerosmith - 10

Yes, there's a lot of Petty, but Tom is only the sixth-biggest of the "droves".
