BEST BAND EVER: Results!

David Byrne is my favorite musician here by a long distance, but he's not a great singer per se.

Voting for Pat Benatar.

This got me thinking whether a best songwriter game could be a thing. I guess the problematic nature of songwriting credits would make it difficult for many bands though - many bands credit the entire band for the songs.

Eliminated after Round 68:
David Byrne
Glenn Danzig
Steve Perry

Promoted after Round 68:
Pat Benatar

James Hetfield (METALLICA)

John Arch (ARCH/MATHEOS, FATES WARNING)

Markus Becker (ATLANTEAN KODEX)

Rob Halford (HALFORD, JUDAS PRIEST)

Rob Halford is the most "technically" talented singer in the bunch, no doubt. I don't know Atlantean Kodex, but that guy definitely has a good voice. Maybe a little too generic, though.

I guess I'm gonna take the personality vote on this one, though, and go with Hetfield. He's not technically gifted but his voice has so much personality. I love Priest overall, but after a couple years now of listening to them I still find Halford's voice to be lacking in natural personality. He is capable of inflecting a ton of different personalities into his voice and that is very impressive, but his natural tone is thin.

I could hear this in late 80s and 90s Priest, but 70s and early 80s Halford is oozing with personality. Take These Chains, Evening Star, Hell Bent For Leather, Sinner immediately spring to mind.

No matter how I listen to Rob Halford sing, I always have the distinct impression that I am listening to someone who knows he is singing. I love Priest. Halford is perfectly suited to Priest. But when I listen to someone like James Hetfield, Bruce Dickinson, Dio, Russell Allen, or Floor Jansen, I get this feeling that if they weren't singing they might explode. Their voice is an extension of their person. It is their soul being pushed out through their lungs. Halford hits these moments, but it is very calculated.

Regardless, if Halford wins this, he deserves it and I will probably vote for him in the future.

Bobbie Halford is obviously the best singer in this group, but I'm giving James Hetfield a pity vote. Since 1991 he's actually been a damn good singer operating within the confines of an average band. He's good at what he does.
