I wouldn't say seventies Priest music is worse than eighties Priest. It depends on the album. Priest did fine albums in both decades.

The seventies was an interesting era when Priest used different (combinations) of songwriters and when their songs weren’t as “compact” as in the eighties. (From British Steel (1980) all songs were labeled Tipton/Halford/Downing).

Leaving out the Ripper era, I'd describe Priest as follows:

70's era: dark, diverse, moody, best lyrics.

80's era: more compact songs (simpler structures - easier lyrics) - great catchy melodies and excellent guitar work.

90's era: their masterpiece Painkiller which is in my opinion the best combination of aggression and melody, ever made in metal music.

I love the subtleties and deeper layers in songs such as Here Come the Tears and Run of the Mill.

70's sounds much closer to progressive rock bands of the same era. Not as technically superior but sound wise, especially Sad Wings of Destiny. Even the up-tempo and heavier songs on the albums sound deep, sweet and pleasing. More layers, bass plays a bigger role, lyrics are better, atmospheres are better. Defenders is an album that I really like and I enjoy Screaming too, but 80's Priest can't hold a candle to 70's Priest if you ask me.

I love you in a brotherly way for this.

'Stained Class' is a far better album in my view, as is 'Rocka Rolla'.

My favourite album of the seventies is 'Unleashed In The East'. If we don't count live albums I'd vote for 'Vol.4' and 'Sabotage' by Black Sabbath.

Okay, if I was to sit down and actually try and compile a top 10 ( impossible task anyways) a Maiden album would perhaps sneak on there...If I did my metal top 10 they most likely would.

I was just listening to Defenders in the car today. A fine album, but it lasted longer than it should have. RIP.

Next, the Dickinson albums, which have lasted WAY longer than they should have.
