My comment wasn't mended on anyone in particular.

Perhaps we could change the name of the game. Instead of calling this survivor "Best album EVER" it could perhaps be changed into something like "Maidenfan's favorite albums 2013" (then we could also make it a yearly recurring thing :p) If it was called the latter I might not have such a big problem since it would be more clear that this is just subjective...But calling an album like Balls To Picasso one of the best albums EVER..You know, ever, as in: in the history of music. Over ALL these tremendous albums. Well that just rubs me the wrong way :D

The whole point is though that you cannot define "BEST" in any real way, how would you judge it? Everyone has a different interpretation. Literally the best way to determine these things is simply to ask a large sample size (ideally several hundred thousand times bigger than this :P) for their favourites and pool the results.

Even then it's largely based on catchiness, nostalgic attachment etc.. but it's still closer than you'll get any other way becaues there simply is no criteria set that can 100% be used for "BEST".

It has been stated quite a few times that this game (or at least its result) cannot be something else than the total of subjective opinions.

If not then how can it be a game? We are not going to get some encyclo-/wikipedia or look up some hitlists from the past instead?

And don't forget: when people like something the most (favourite) it is for them the best.

Polls are a funny thing. If ten people believe that Balls is the greatest albums ever, then the opinion of one who doesn't like it doesn't count.
It's all a matter of figures - I can't accept the fact that many of this forum's favourite albums/bands are good, let alone great, but my opinion doesn't mean a thing because I'm in the minority here.

But it would still be the same. Maidenfans do not have the same opinion about what is great, right?

Actually, I don't think there is such thing as a "best" album ever. I don't like the word "best." Imo, there are only two ways to go here: Greatest Album or Favorite Album. And I think it's pretty clear this is a favorites poll.

I suppose for semantics people (I include myself in this group actually) it'd be best to change the title. :p

And for the record, I adore Balls To Picasso. I don't think there's a bad song on it (off the top of my head), and it's got some great gems. I like it more than some of the "greater" albums on here. But I do believe the reason it's not getting ganged up on is simply that it's not collectively disliked as much as other albums on the list.

Except that it helps steer us closer to a consensus that would be different if your voice, or mine, or any other poster's isn't included.
Which is actually code for "vote so we can save Superunknown from these heretics" ;-)

Yes really. I just have to remind myself when I check these threads that this is a "what is your favorite album out of these that you enjoy listening to" thread and not put so much emphasis on the "best album EVER" title :p

Cause if you say Best album EVER to me I'll start throwing around The Sabbath's and the Zeps and The Stones..But there is a difference when it s just "What you do enjoy listening too the most"..t is easier for me to see people's picks in that light then

Then why do you think it is his best?

And what is for you the difference between:
A: "Bruce's best album" (or "the best Bruce album")
B: "Your favourite Bruce album"

Not really.

The difference between "best" and "favorite" is I actually have criteria for the former, whereas the latter is just my preference. "Best" still comes down to each individual's criteria (unless we all formulate criteria together) and can still be subjective, but it's still different from "favorite."

I believe Tyranny is Bruce's best album because, imo, it flows the best and every song is extremely well-crafted. I prefer Skunkworks because I'm just more attached to it.

Well, as long as you are restricting best ever to "released at least twenty to thirty years ago" and "no solo material by Maiden members allowed" ;), then these are your criteria. That doesn't mean they are written in stone, or that we all have the same.

But preference also has criteria.

So you say you use different criteria?

Interesting. But aren't there reasons why you are attached to it? Maybe these criteria are even more important? And there are reasons why you find the other extremely well-crafted (I'd say the Skunkworks songs are also extremely well-crafted because they fit to your taste; how else did you become attached?).

And if I ask you which album you like to listen to most, then do you still disagree with me that this very album can be your favourite, because you enjoy it the most, and that it is therefore the best album for you because you enjoy listening to it the most?

Just my 2 cents.
