What's your criteria? I think Brighter is much more developed and cohesive, and it has better riffs and better lyrics. But The Thin Line has better vocals, solos, and buildups, and it's more emotional.

I think Devil explains it quite well..

Also I might enjoy a simple metal or rock song but know that most of what I'm listening to is pretty generic. Hundreds of other bands have done and are doing exactly the same. Then I might be listening to say, War Pigs by Sabbath and know how Original this was when it came out or I might be listening/reading a stanza or a line in a Dylan song and realize no one has ever quite been able to put my own thought or feelings into something as brilliantly as Dylan just did there..That will typically separate good fun/favorite albums from the best albums for me. When does an album actually speak to you and when do you just enjoy rocking out to it with a few beers? Huge difference. Personally many classic rock bands have always had more weight behind them for me compared to many current day metal bands, who haven't been able to hit me as personally...but that I still do enjoy to listen to, some of them at least :)

My main criteria is my own personal taste, which I consider exemplary. :smartarse: But if I had to describe it, Thin Line is more musical, more varied and generally more interesting. It has more smile-inducing moments. I'm not knocking Brighter, by the way -- I like it very much -- but it is a little less musical and, to my memory, maybe even a bit more repetitive. (But I can live with that -- The Longest Day is my favorite song from AMOLAD, and it is quite repetitive in its chorus.)

You, sir, have fantastic taste.

Now look at these definitions from http://oxforddictionaries.com/ and the parts in blue and red (especially Kill Devil Hill).

How can something be preferred to all others while it is not the most enjoyable? Really, I'd say that when you only can choose for one song or album in the end, you need to point out which you prefer.
How to do that? In the end you need to choose what you enjoy the most. So in this game, it is the same.

If you preferred Taylor Swift to Freddie Mercury, would that make Taylor Swift the better singer? If you preferred watching your little brother play basketball over Kobe Bryant, would your brother be a better basketball player than Kobe Bryant?

Sorry, we're doing something different here. How do you decide which album wins here?
edit: I can still answer your question: Yes, both Swift and the brother would be the best for you because you enjoy them the most.

Since mckindog made it clear pretty early in the game that this was a favorites game (despite the title), I've been picking my favorite. :p All I've been trying to say is best and favorite are not synonymous.

Well, I showed with the Oxford dictionary that these terms cannot be distinguished in this context. You said you like Skunkworks more. This means you enjoy it more.

Definition of best
adjective
most enjoyable

Thus you find it the best, thus that is the reason you prefer it, thus these terms are the same, in this game.

Definitions show you how a word can be used in different contexts (that's why they're numbered). The "most enjoyable" definition does not work in this context. I can look at Tyranny of Souls and acknowledge that that album is better than Skunkworks. It's not because I find it more enjoyable; it's because it's the better written album of the two.

If you look at the "most enjoyable" example the definition uses, it is using it on something entirely subjective. Music is not entirely subjective, so it does not work in this context.

However, since mckindog specifically said that he meant favorites, I'm still picking my favorites. :D

I agree with KDH's explanation of best and favorite, but I think doing a "game" where we decide which albums are the best would be rather silly. Favorite is the natural one.

I don't see how you can say your little brother would be a better basketball player than Kobe Bryant just because you enjoy watching him play more ?? Everyone knows Bryant would be the better basketball player. I can also enjoy reading some unimportant/waste a few hours suspense book but know that there are far better pieces of literature out there.
