Battle Of Covers: Nominations

Doubt I would be voting for them, but two of the most successful metal cover songs of all-time were Motley Crue's Smoking in the Boys Room and Quiet Riot's Come on Feel the Noise.

Joan Jett got into the RnR Hall of Fame based largely on the success of her cover songs. Not metal, necessarily, but solid hard rock. Consider adding to the list at least one of the following:

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts -- I Love Rock n' Roll (The Arrows)
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts -- Crimson and Clover (Tommy James)
Joan Jett -- Do You Wanna Touch Me (Gary Glitter)

It's already been nominated, but I just want to note for the record that I think "I Fought the Law" by The Clash should win. I also think "Sweet Jane" (Lou Reed) by the Cowboy Junkies is a fantastic cover, far surpasses the original, but it probably has no place in this game.

A couple other nominations, just for fun.

Sid Vicious -- My Way (Frank Sinatra)
Mott the Hoople -- All the Young Dudes (David Bowie) -- surprised this hasn't been nominated already

EDIT: Just realized that NP closed nominations a page ago. OK, so I'm a dick. Consider, and include or discard at your discretion, NP. ;)

Another EDIT: I was wrong, Bowie wrote AtYD for Mott the Hoople, who originally recorded it -- Bowie recorded it himself later. So, which is the cover?? Withdraw that nomination. But it's still a great song.

Yeah, I have enough songs now plus that ain't metal or rock :P

Should be an interesting game. I predict that the metal covers will likely dominate in this forum, but the nonmetal covers are all pretty compelling. Again, my personal faves are I Fought the Law and Crimson & Clover.

Since it didn't make the game (a judgment I don't question one bit, it's way too mellow for this list), I post in the spoiler below the cover that is, I think, the most striking improvement over the original. Even the original artist thought the cover was better, and the original is well regarded in its own right.

Most noteworthy omission is Joe Cocker's cover of "A Little Help From My Friends," which is a bummer because The Wonder Years.

Can't agree with that. All the fun of "Sweet Jane" is in Reed's delivery. The Cowboy Junkies version is fine to listen to, but it's just a decent piece of mellow pop with nothing in particular to recommend it.
