.

Steve, Bruce and Janick are remarkably fit for men their age.
Steve and Bruce still have their drive and Janick is just an old soul who is at peace with his world.

Adrian is still a vital creative artist who seems comfortable now with the place Maiden has in his life.

I agree with Foro that Dave breathed more life into his playing on the new album. I also found him to be very lively on stage this time. He also looks his age. I could see him not feeling up to a tour at some point, but also think he would find it hard to say "no" too.

Nicko loves being in the band but health will catch up with him fairly soon.
The decision will come with him.

Whatever tour or album they are working on when the first man drops will be their last, IMO.

Apart from Bruce (who probably has an embryo jelly diet like Mister Burns) and Janick, they all look like they are reaching the age limit to do what they do, on stage at least.

Steve runs around like he used to do. They are doing a really long tour this year, so europeans fans will see what they look like after 50-60 gigs. It might be their last long tour, but they can handle 20-30 dates tours for a few years.

In my opinion the entire band still performs with great energy, considering their age. Many people who was in the same show as me said the same thing. It was one of the main comments after the show. This is also clear in all the videos I saw from the tour.

Bruce and Janick are unbelievable. Steve, although not as energetic as Bruce and Janick, is still running, jumping, headbanging and his playing (the most important thing) is still top notch. Dave and Adrian still their usual self. I can't see much difference between their performance on this tour and on the last one. Actually, I think they are showing more enthusiasm on this tour, this is noticeable mainly in Adrian's performance. Nicko is the one I'm most worried about, although he is still rocking those drums. It would be really sad, but I agree with those who said the band could go on if Nicko or one of the three guitarrists leave.

Harris' departure would kill it, obviously. Everyone else is essentially non-essential.
Janick seems the most easily dispensable, but he gives them a punky edge which is needed within their square, rigid formula.

Blasphemer! ;) Whether one thinks Janick is "dispensable" is obviously subjective and might be agreed or disagreed upon according to whom you ask.

However, I would say Janick gives the band a "rough" edge instead, since nothing in Janick's background (and in what we know of his tastes) seems to be related to punk. White Spirit, Gillan and Bruce's Tattooed Millionaire period are sheer rock n roll in spirit.

And what Janick writes is usually superbly progressive stuff, really intricate numbers. Yeah, love Janick.

Janick's playing is off the wall and unpredictable which helps break up the framework. Nico does wonders in this department as well. Punky is probably incorrect phrasing.
Personally I think Dave leaving would create a huge hole spiritually.

Well I guess at this time Nicko would be the only one truly 'replaceable' without affecting the songwriting that much. I'd hate loosing his style and sound in Maiden and if they're bound let him rest a bit then it should be somebody like Portnoy taking the spot.

The initial question is what would make the band so different that it would not be Maiden anymore. With that in mind, was Maiden still Maiden without Bruce and Adrian? Yes they were, so, only Steve and Davey are absolutely necessary in that respect; they both define the sound of the band and have obviously all the legitimity to keep the band going. Would the band still be as good with major line-up changes? No way.

Hate thinking about the end, but we're closer to it now than ever.
Yes, but probably further than we were two years ago.

You are right. I must confess I'm really surprised to see how highly he is considered. He is a great Metal singer, no doubt, but for many people (and for himself), he is a lot more than that.

Huge public persona and an exceptionally inspiring figure. Not many people achieve so much, and he comes across as being true to his principles, straight talking, and unusually down-to-earth for someone in his position.

Yes. For some reason I'm not that receptive to his charisma. Anyway, now that I've bought his solo stuff (with three records I really appreciate), I understand better the fascination.

"If I can't play, if my hands or arms don't work any more, then I'll pass the sticks on to someone else.
"There's too much great music in this band for them not to carry on if I couldn't do it. I'm not saying that could happen, but I'm not an idiot. I know what my capabilities are and I would never be a parody of myself."

So, this settles one questioning, which is the most real: the band's reaction to Nicko's retirement.

Don't get me wrong. I like Nicko a lot, but I would be interested in hearing Maiden at some point with a new, more agressive drummer, just to now how they would sound like. The British Lion drummer is not half as good as Nicko, but Harry and him get along well live, and some of their patterns are quite intersting, so he definitely can play with another drummer, and enjoy it, which is the main thing to me. That said, Nicko is quite a character and I would not like to have to fill his shoes.

I would not want to see a line up change at this point. Look at the joke AC-DC has become. If any member wanted to leave or could not deliver at the necessary level, then I think they should call it a day. A sad day indeed, but it would be the right thing to do. IMO.
