2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia (Maidenfans WC Pool inside)

Today's quiz question:

What do these events have in common: World Cup 1990, Euro 96, World Cup 1998, Euro 2004, World Cup 2006 and Euro 2012 ?
None of them were won by England.
You come closest, Per. In all these tournaments, England was beaten on penalties. A national trauma.

Since 1990, England won a penalty series only once: in 1996 in the quarter final against Spain. In the semi final they were beaten on penalties by Germany.

This time England has a good weapon: Harry Kane with his devastating shot.

Whoever can forget Stuart Pierce's emotion when he scored his penalty in 1996, with the 1990 drama still very deep inside him.

He said they are well prepared.

And Southgate said there was a lack of quality in the past. Not now, apparently. :)

We may see about that soon. England have a big mental block when it comes to penalties - losing in shoot-outs has become part of English footballing psyche. They can prepare all they want with whatever fancy methods they can but if they get to a shoot-out in the semi-final then past failures will surely play on their mind, even if results from the 90s have no relevance.

You're also forgetting the goalkeeper. He plays a big role in this too. Many penalties are saved, not missed. A penalty can be struck well but if the keeper guesses right then it can be saved, and a penalty can be struck poorly but will still be scored if the keeper guesses wrong.

Ah alright. Well, I did not forget anything. Never said that goalkeepers do not belong to a football team and I am aware of their role.
But thanks for pointing it out still!

The Swiss defense is doing plenty of unforced errors. Those are the chances Sweden need to capitalize on, because I have a feeling that the overall quality of the Swiss team is better.
