They play 2 halves of 15 minutes, just like the regular halves but shorter. Then, if neither team has scored more than the other - penalty shootout.

There were attempts to use the sudden death principle (for example in Euro 96), but both FIFA and UEFA have since abandoned it in their tournaments.
 
So you play both halves regardless, even if one team scores in the 1st, you still play the 2nd 15?
 
In extra time you really get to see how tuned footballers are to play 90 minutes, not less, not more. The tempo usually goes down a lot in extra time. Of course, the tiredness also means there is a bigger chance of mistakes ...
