DAWSON 1 YEAR ON

The funny thing is in 2023, particularly prior to the news of his stroke coming out, Nicko was getting all kinds of abuse online for his performances with people saying he was washed up and past it. Like it or not this is the version of Maiden that we have now, Steve and the band were always more likely to give the job to an 'inside man' as opposed to holding an audition process. To me it is much more preferable to have Maiden with Simon on the drums vs. no Maiden at all, but the Nicko of 10 or even 5 years ago would be better still.

They have an ‘inside man’ who’s been groomed for the job for over a decade. Joe Lazarus can wipe the floor with Dawson.

In a youtube video filmed at home? Perhaps. But we have no idea if he can do the same live on stage night after night, or it could even be down to something as simple as Steve feeling more comfortable with someone he's already toured with for years and not wanting to take the chance.

He performs several shows every week.

Joe Lazarus has been successfully doing session work and touring internationally with different artists for over a decade.

The problem with this opinion is that Nicko retired
And he retired primarily because the touring schedule was too grueling for his health. Had the band decided to drastically lessen the frequency of their live commitments, there's a possibility he wouldn't have retired.

You need to look up the definitions of the following words:

- Art
- Fact
- Objective
- Subjective

Art is subjective. You need to stop passing your subjective thoughts as "facts". They are not "facts". They are simply how you perceive these things.
Remember last year when you told me that it was an "objective fact" that Simon's drumming on RFYL was better than Nicko's drumming on Future Past?

Art is subjective, eh?

That’s actually an important point. Sometimes musicians make a fantastic impression in videos they’ve recorded at home, but when they rehearse with the band, they can’t quite pull it off anymore - let alone perform on stage.

However, of course, they could have figured all of this out during a selection process, for example, made it a requirement that the drummer already has experience performing in front of large audiences.

That said, Maiden wasn’t looking for someone who could imitate Nicko as closely as possible; I think that’s why they didn’t want Joe Lazarus.

Lazarus has huge experience of touring all over the world, with numerous artists at all levels.

He is much, much more than a Nicko clone. A brief perusal of his instagram proves this.

Dunno what the problem is. I think he is being an upgrade to them, and I like his drumming, there is some kind of bright presence about it. Perhaps I'm the only one here, but I personally am completely fine with him. And what I also liked is that they did the whole thing/replacement without bigger drama, but he's just in & there, and that's it. It could have come worse.

I really think it boils down to a scenario as simple as this:

Simon is 'on retainer' as the back-up drummer on the Future Past Tour because Steve is already taking British Lion along to play side shows and it means the rhythm section are used to playing with each other.

As per an interview with Bruce last year, the band rehearse with Simon on an off-day during the tour, everyone thinks it goes great and that Simon is 'stage ready'.

Nicko stands down at the end of the tour, Simon is the automatic replacement on account of the above.

In real life, circumstances, interpersonal relationships and sheer convenience play a big part and it is not a case of simply picking a drummer with the best stat block like an RPG party member. Who knows? Maybe if Joe Lazarus had been part of the Maiden crew during TFP he might have ended up being the replacement.

He’s in his late 30s. And looks remarkably like Steve Harris. That has currency.

But you know what has the most value? Being a fucking brilliant drummer. He has the experience. He has the chops. He knows the tunes. Maiden is in his blood.

Oops, looks like someone's about to ask for a DNA test.
