Why has some great songs been overlooked when it came to playing them live?

Why is this? Like I understand not playing songs like Quest for Fire, Sun and Steel, and Flash of the Blade.. as they are weaker songs. But songs like Deja Vu, The Prophecy, Back in the Village, and Alexander the Great deffinately deserve a live play in my opinion! Alexander the Great especially as the Iron MaidenS did an excellant live performance of the song! (Therefore showing it could be a great live favorite).. and on their 2000 tour they shoulda went back and forth with Dream of Mirrors and The Nomad as The Nomad is another awesome song

Even Judas Be My Guide, and The Fugitive I think deserve a live shot!

Bruce apparently expressed his dislike of Alexander the Great's lyrics, so the band never played it live. Zare mentioned it once, maybe he's got a source on that piece of info.

Judas Be My Guide has an awesome chorus but its a weak song and I'm glad they didn't play it instead of something else.

But I agree there are some songs that should be played live at least once or more often. The reasons range from not liking the songs, not being popular enough, being too difficult to play live/not sounding good live or perhaps out of respect to their songwriters (I imagine some Blaze songs won't be played live ever because Bruce isn't so good at some of Blaze's vocals).

Some of the songs they have probably even forgotten how to play and likely can't be bothered re-learning them.

The best we can hope for at least for 90s songs is that the history part 3 tour will focus on them. But it doesn't seem very likely.

I think i read somewhere that Bruce thought the lyrics were daft, not sure where i read that but it does ring a bell with me, might be wrong though. As for forgotten songs, i think No Prayer for the Dying should be recalled, i love the chorus guitar melodies and Nicko's drumming, certainly better than Tailgunner, sorry but i hate that song(cue backlash and abuse).

Why has some great songs been overlooked when it came to playing them live?

[_] They can't/couldn't play every song live
[_] They felt the songs they played live were better than those they didn't play live
[_] They felt the songs they played would work better live than those they didn't play
[_] They felt those songs weren't all that great
[_] They didn't play those songs live because Bruce ate Steve's cat
[_] They didn't play those songs because they wanted to piss you off
[_] Nobody knows

Change "Nobody knows" to "all of the above".  :ninja: I'm positive 1-6 are all true.

Ah, i finally know why Bruce really  left Maiden in the first place...

:angel2:

I know Bruce has been on the record saying Mother Russia's lyrics are awful, but I hadn't heard him say he disliked the lyrics of Alexander.  Not hard to imagine, though.

Condidering Bruce and him commenting on his lyrics:
Never heard of any of the things you guys are saying.

I think Bruce only said that the lyrics of Run Silent Run Deep were the worst he ever wrote for Maiden.

Well I heard he said that the lyrics of Total Eclipse are complete tosh.  :P

Since when are good lyrics a requirement for a song to be played live? I seem to recall "Iron Maiden" being played live once or twice.

Perhaps I miss something here but these are not his lyrics.

Good point. All instrumentals were played as well.

Seems to be a pretty popular trend with a lot of bands. I've given up wondering why certain bands arn't playing certain songs on tour. The list of potential reasons is almost as long as the list of bands itself

Songs they should work back into the set list: Blood On The World's Hands, The Duellists, The Prophecy, When Two Worlds Collide, Running Silent... just to name a few. Speaking of Running Silent..., lyrics are fine in my opinion. Dickinson has written worse.

I wish they would omit a few staples from their live set. Tired old songs like Run To The Hills and The Trooper can be replaced with numerous other less played gems from their catalogue.

Funny that he wouldn't like the lyrics to Running Silent, Running Deep because according to the commentary he actually saved those lyrics from a SiT song that got rejected and then added them to the music of RS,RD. If he kept them you would've thought they'd be good!

Furthermore, I remember reading somewhere that some of Bruce's rejected SiT material found its way onto his Tattooed Millionaire album. I think 1000 Points of Light was one of them.

Anyways, I've always been a fan of The Fallen Angel. I think that would be pretty good played live.

Since i've been quoted as a source of information regarding Bruce's disliking of Alexs' lyrics, i clearly remember where i got that from;

It was ten years ago, people from fanclub had a chance to ask questions, random poll, and Maiden would answer them. The Q&A was published on their website. I might try to use archive.org to dig that up.
