Why "Final Frontier"?

Interesting how TNotB - an album that gained notoriety for supposed satanism - would be renamed into a seemingly very Christian title

It just wouldn't have sold.

Where do you see this?

Satellite 15... The Final Frontier - obvious space theme

El Dorado - searching for the fabled golden city, getting lied to and conned and eventually abandoned on a sinking ship

Coming Home - Flying around the globe in a jet

The Talisman - pilgrims or exiles fleeing their country in search of a new world

Starblind - More philosophical in nature, but uses lots of star / sun imagery.

Not that all have to do with space or exploration, but there is a running motif through some of the songs.  Plus if the album were called "The Talisman," it doesn't relate to any of the other tunes - but The Final Frontier is more of a general concept than a concrete place or thing, and as such the ideas in many of the songs can be related to it.

But Nick wasn't there when Beast came out.
Still it's something that would lower Irons in my eyes. Like all the gore on the covers they have.

I didn't even pay attention to the previous conversation, so I assumed it meant modern day.

:o Brilliant! There's your album cover for the next studio album (assuming there is one) The Christian right would fucking go MAD. Would be a brilliant way to sign off. I salute you.

I don't see Nick, for one, allowing the band to do that.
Can't see him having much of a say if Steve wanted it. Doubt he'd go for it though. It would be such a fantastic "fuck you" to all those lunatics who gave them shit and accused them of being "evil" over the years. I'd LOVE them to do something to have a dig back before they sign off.

I wouldn't like it, it's just too provocative, and that being said I'm an atheist.  It's what some cheap black metal band would do, like tearing bibles at live shows.  Such a thing would not only offend the Christian right, but I believe a whole bunch of moderate Christians as well.

I mean, do Maiden exist to make great music, or to deliberately piss people off just for the sake of pissing them off?

i wouldn't like it because bruce already did that with AOB. And Maiden have never tried to piss off Christians because they respect people and if I were Nick i'd be very mad if Steve came in and said "For the next album we're gonna insult you're beliefs." I also find it very unlikely for Steve to allow that as he is very openminded.

I think Starblind would be a BRILLIANT album title, as it's a none-word similar to Powerslave.  Plus, it's a great center piece track on the album.  The Final Frontier is sort of a boring title, imo.  It's servicable, but the album has so little to do with space.  Starblind is much more ambiguous as a title.

That's the point though, offending the Christian right. I mean they get offended anyway so Maiden may as well get some joy out of it.

That being said, I suppose you have a point. They wrote Virus as a dig back at the media and that turned out RUBBISH.

I don't really give a damn for the Christian right, and as you said, they get offended anyway.  But, like you said, they get offended anyway, so why offend moderate Christians who might even be fans or potential fans?

Starblind would have worked also I think.

Listen, to the guys who want Eddie crucified or something outlandish like that, what would be the point?  The only thing they stand to lose is record sales, and there's not much to gain.  The biggest middle finger they can give "The Right" or anyone who has attacked them over the years is a chart-topping records and sold out stadiums worldwide.  To change something as big as an album cover just to "get back" at detractors seems beneath Maiden somehow.

There is no point.

I threw that comment out very matter-of-factly without either advocating or discouraging it. I can't speak for others who might be excited about the idea; but since we're on the topic, if the band had a message to convey or had a commentary about religion/Christianity (that they felt strongly enough about) to express via such a symbolism in their album art --- why not?

The fact that it will offend people doesn't necessarily mean that it's meant to offend people. It doesn't necessarily mean that they want to get back an anyone or give a big FU to the Catholic Church. It's just a matter of weighing things like:

"How strongly do we feel about the message we want to communicate?"
"Are we ready for the controversy and backlash?"
"Do we accept the fact that it will offend a lot people and disappoint some fans?"

Having said all of that...  unless they all have a similar life-changing epiphanies or moments of clarity that point towards a single thought that could be communicated through such an image... it's not going to happen.  They seem to be such open-minded, smart, respectful and fun-loving individuals to do such a thing.

Surely moderates wouldn't be offended by it. If a cartoon of Eddie on the cross gets your back up I'd suggest you're a lot more right than centre.

I think the idea of Eddie on the cross is lame.  Who cares if Maiden offends people.  The biggest offense is indifference, and the fact that Maiden simply go about doing what they do without trying to provoke a reaction is a testament to their integrity.  I don't think i'd respect a band that lives to just piss people off.  It's a counter action that is as hollow as the people who called them devil worshippers in the first place.  And at this point, there is nothing left to prove.  However, IF the idea was well thought out, not anti religious for the sake of it, then I could probably see it being a pretty cool image in general.
