Vancouver '10 Games

I was just watching the halfpipe snowboard tricks thingummy, and out of about the 12 that I saw 6/7 fell and got a crap score because of it. Is that due to bad snow or do lots of them always mess up?

Also saw the highlights of the ice hockey match between Canada and Norway - that puck moves so quickly I have no idea where it is most of the time!

1-2 finish in Women's Downhill puts America back at the top of the medal count.   :ok:  Good for Lindsay Vonn -- not sure if the rest of the world pays any attention, but she's the biggest celebrity in the U.S. among all the Olympians, as well she should be:  best in the world at her sport, and pretty hot to boot.

The rest of the world? Hehe, sure we pay attention. We always pay attention, you know that.  :D
Saw it, since it wasn't in the middle of the night.

Quite some ladies fell, some of the best competitors had to wait so terribly long that it's no wonder they were robbed from their concentration.

But Vonn surely ruled, she's a tough athlete, never giving up, even with bad injuries. Have a praise!

@Wingman, congrats with that first golden medal for Norway! That was a great race to watch. She beat the Polish girl in that important bend.

Plus congrats with that bronze medal. Man, those two Russian dudes had some close finish!

Thanks, on behalf of all relieved Norwegians  :D I'm really happy for Marit Bjørgen, she's been struggling for some time now (since her fantastic results in the FIS World Championships in 2005). She really deserved this.

As for the men's final - I was shocked! Those two Russians must have had gunpowder for breakfast. Really impressive how they managed to keep their pace up after that start - I thought they were just trying to shock the Norwegian trio, but they just went on, and on. Could hardly believe it. From a Norwegian perspective, the semis were the highlights of the men's sprint. The fact that we got the bronze in the final was sort of expected after those semis - but since we haven't been too spoiled in these games, I'll gladly take it  :D

Tonight I expect our biathletes to be screaming for vengeance, and I hope we can give the US hockey team a fight even longer than we did against Canada. Tonight's game is actually before midnight, Central European time. How convenient  B)

And Cornfedchick - of course we pay attention to Lindsey Vonn. Who wouldn't?  :P

PS: I read an hour ago that Petra Majdic, who finished third in the women's sprint final, actually had four broken ribs! I knew that she had hurt herself while warming up, but not that it was that bad. Finishing both the prologue, quarter- and semifinals and then finishing third in the final with that injury deserves MASSIVE respect!

I didn't see it nor the reports. In fact nobody reported on the halfpipe, what they DID report was the women's downhill where 6 women crashed, the most in LONG time, so much so the Olympic chairman decided to shorten the track and reshape the last downhill. Skiers complained about it being too bumpy... THAT was due to the conditions of the track.

More hockey today!

People wipe out on the halfpipe all the time. That's why there's 2 runs and only your best run counts.

Furthermore, they always try tricks that are on the border of their own skills, because when you perform a difficult trick, you score more points. That contributes to the risk of falling.

His second run, the meaningless run, was even better - he didn't even have to go down the pipe, but what a hell of a show!

Canada another gold! Congrats for Nesbitt on the 1000m. She was only 0,02 seconds faster than Annette Gerritsen who fell on the 500m. Bronze medal also for Holland. Laurine van Riessen was only 0.16 seconds behind the gold.  :yey:

And Vonn fell today.

After 31 out of 90 medals:
                       G   S   B   T
1. USA               5   4   6  15
2. Germany         4   4   3  11
3. Canada           3   3   1   7
4. South-Korea    3   2   0   5
5. Switserland     3   0   1   4
6. Norway           2   2   2   6

I didn't see the gold but hey we'll take it! I love speed skating, I'm sad I missed it.

Tora Berger secured the first Olympic biathlon gold ever for a female Norwegian! As if that wasn't enough, Emil Hegle Svendsen and Ole Einar Bjørndalen secured gold and silver in the men's 20 km as well. What a great evening it was!

By the way, not often Australia win gold medals in the Winter Games! The one in women's half pipe yesterday is only their fourth one - ever! I think that's really cool  :)

I'm also quite pleased with the two first periods of the hockey match against USA. We kept up with them quite well, and produced some great opportunities. Still, we are too weak in our finishing and in front of our own goal to be able to actually beat the big nations.

Didn't watch the match, but I read they needed a penalty shootout to win ... that's a shocker. And since Switzerland, like Norway, are going to be among the 8 teams that are ranked 5-12 for the next round, it's not particularly good news for us. Anyway, if we are to avoid one of the really big teams and have a chance on the quarter-final, we need to beat them anyway. A point for them against Canada doesn't change that.

Tonight I'm looking forward to the men's Super-G where we hope that Aksel Lund Svindal can repeat his achievement from the downhill event, or maybe even improve it? It is his best discipline. Also looking forward to the women's cross country event (7,5 km classical + 7,5 km free) where maybe Marit Bjørgen can challenge for another medal?

Team Canada escaped defeat yesterday.

Indeed we did. And an embarassing defeat it would have been. But thanks to the brilliance of Martin Brodeur we are OK - the Swiss goalie played well. I hope an important lesson was learned for our Sunday fight against the USA.

The Russians, however, were defeated, by the Slovaks.

Tonight's the first real chance for Norway to win a hockey game in these Olympics - although it's going to be tough, considering how the Swiss fared against Canada. We'll need to be on top of our game for 3*20 to beat them.

I have higher hopes for the ski jumpers. Our boys usually do better in the large hill than in the so-called "normal" hill, and showed promising jumping in the training and qualification rounds yesterday. The men's 30 km (15 km classic + 15 km free) is also going to be exciting, with Petter Northug obviously ready to show that the 15 km wasn't representative for his capabilities.

Then, of course, there's the curling match against Denmark. If the boys in the harlequin pants can beat the Danes, a semi-final looks more and more likely.

Finally, the men's 1500 m speed skating. Can Håvard Bøkko improve on his 4th place from the 5000? He's not done bad on 1500 m earlier this season, he's been second twice and third once. However, Shani Davis is the favourite, he's only been beaten once this season, by Chad Hedrick.

Well, these two events didn't go to bad, did they?  :D
