Yeah, conflicting reports. I'm sure the big reveal will be during the press conference. At the moment we don't know if the gunman or men have been caught, and so far 6 confirmed dead, 7 injured and the congresswoman is in "critical condition." though one outlet was brave enough to pronounce her dead.

Wow...its so weird when it hits that close to home.

Yeah, the other day my mother phoned me to ask if I was alright. I didn't know what she was talking about until she told me it was on the news that a 26-year old man had been stabbed in a street in my borough.

BBC was reporting that the gunman had been arrested, and that he was using an automatic weapon.  The only confirmation I had read was an aid had died.

I'm sure its all over the news outlets there, so you probably have some very good info there.  What a mess.

Wow, Perun, that is pretty crazy also.

@bearfan, I was just thinking that-- what could his defense actually be?  I don't know, you would think it would be pretty open and shut.

I wonder what this woman did to make someone hate her so much. Or maybe it was an assault on the Democrat Party... or maybe it was just some random lunatic.

EDIT:

I did some research. One tragic irony is that she is apparently a supporter of gun ownership and an NRA member. She's also got a number of other controversial stances, such as pro-choice (is that an issue in AZ?), support for renewable energies, and support of stricter border control. I guess there's a lot for some nutcase to hate there.

Well, she is a 'liberal' in a pretty conservative state.  i don't know, but what I have read so far says she has been harassed quiet a bit, her office had been broken into and vandalized last spring.

I hope she pulls through. It doesn't sound good for the poor woman.

If this is an assassination and not just the byproduct of a random crime, then it will be extremely interesting to see what the motives were. I mean that from the cold, neutral view; whatever happens, the person(s) responsible deserve a long prison term.

She was shot in the head... I hate being a pessimist, but I doubt you can "pull through" from a point blank shot to the head.

You sure can. It's been known to happen, depending on the angle of the shot, point of impact, etc.

It's just really, really rare. Like I said, it doesn't sound too good.

I HATE "late breaking" news. They don't know crap, report fluff and interview rubberneckers who don't add anything constructive.

You are exactly correct on that 'news' bit.  I'm watching the cnn.com live coverage and its just waiting for the press conf right now.

Apparently the gunman suspect was a 21 year old male, lone gunman.
Most frustrating press conference... all the sheriff's answers are, "no comment,' "we don't know," "I'm not aware," etc...

Yeah, that was pretty worthless as info goes.  I was surprised to hear him say something like "we have info that, even though we know, we can't tell you yet."  OK, fair enough.

So, the number of injured is up to 18, but possibly 5-6 were not shot, but injured in trying to get way.  But they are saying up to 5 dead.

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm always surprised with reporters use of words that I'd term 'slang'.  I heard one guy say that the gunman 'had an extended mag so he could squeeze off more shots', and a woman say 'he was close so he could mow down more people'.  I know, its a small thing, but seems odd to hear in a professional broadcast.

I agree about the "slang" usage, but it makes it relatable. I don't agree, but oh well, I'm not on the news haha.
Well, I'm off to try and have a normal 4 hours before the next press conference at 6.

It's not a professional broadcast. Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, etc were professional broadcasters. Most of these guys are flirts in shirts.

That is very accurate. Unfortunate, but accurate.  It is kind of surprising how few 'professional' newspeople there are, with as many news broadcasts as there are.

I found the CNN headline quite insulting: "Federal judge dead, congresswoman among 12 wounded in shooting".  What about the other five dead so far? They're only mentioned in the second paragraph.

Psh, When hasn't it been the era of big government? Once government "grows" it doesn't shrink.

:ok:

If people knew what big government really was, then maybe that'd be accurate. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who rail against big government are like the guy who wrote Obama and told him to keep the government out of Medicare.

Just heard:

Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (a Democrat, 40 years) was holding a constituent meeting at the grocery store when she and others were shot.

(CNN)

Of course, the news gives much more compassion to a politician than an innocent child.

That slang helps sensationalize the news.

Thank you, that was my point above.  There is a connection between lack of professional news broadcasts and the pandering to The State that all news networks do.

Well, the Congresswoman Giffords was the intended target. The judge unfortunately was just there wrong place wrong time from the several reports. As for the other people, they have not released names as they have not had a chance to inform next-of-kin, so it is to protect privacy.
