No real surprises, except for the amount of Texan seats.

Interesting to see how they get distributed. Most of the population increase is Hispanics in Texas, and the legislature will likely attempt to gerrymander them into nothingness.

The 4 seats will most likely end up 1 Dem  leaning /Minority seats and 1 GOP leaning seats and 2 actual semi-tossups (mainly near Houston and Dallas suburbs which are growing big-time).  The map needs to be approved by the Justice Department, I assume they will balk at anything short of 1 more minority-majority district.

I admit I'm not 100% on how it gets done. I seem to recall that one of Texas's plans in 2000 was rejected.

It's very interesting to watch the Texas demographic shift, because interestingly enough, Texas may become a mostly Hispanic state sooner rather than later, which would mean a (likely) Democrat vote from the state. Very interesting to me.

Well, that depends.  Hispanics are not as reliable a voting bloc as blacks are and are more diverse depending on where the come from (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba etc, it will be interesting to see as they are here longer, will the second and thrid generations vote with their economic demographic versus racial demographic.  With the exception of blacks, all other ethnic groups have "assimilated" over time.  Texas also does not have the same liberal base that exists in California, many Texas democrats (exluding the inner city segments) are to the right of California Republicans for example.

Oh, I know. I know it's not a unified block. However, Texas has been trending more to the left than to the right these past years.

It's hard to say.  I live here, though am not from here, so I see the current, but am not well versed in Texas political history.  This past year, Bill White (Houston Mayor) ran a really good race for governor.  White is a pretty well respected figure and had this election been two years ago, he might have had a shot as Rick Perry is not a politician that people "love", but think is effective but perhaps a bit crooked.  White's ads were that Perry was not tough enough on immigration, attacked him for proposing HPV vaccine for young girls, etc.

Texas (and most southern democrats, with the exception of the inner cities, Shiela Jackson Lee of Houston for example), run pretty far to the right as that is really the only way for them to win a state-wide race.  White never mentioned his party affiliation and ran as a conservative.  He was in many ways a perfect candidate for the state and he still got beaten badly.  Former Texas democrats like Ann Richards being the last governor was pretty conservative by most Democratic standards.

Um... I thought it already was. The largest pockets of hispanics are New york (puerto rico), Florida (cuba), Chicago (from all over), Southern California, Arizona and Texas (Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras)

Did not think I would ever say this, but I agree 100% with Pat Robertson (on this issue):

"We're locking up people that take a couple of puffs of marijuana, and the next thing you know they've got 10 years," the controversial pastor said on "The 700 Club" on Dec. 16, in a clip unearthed by bloggers this week. "I'm not exactly for the use of drugs - don't get me wrong - but I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot and that kind of thing, I mean, it's just, it's costing us a fortune and it's ruining young people."

He continued: "We've got to take a look at what we're considering crimes, and that's one of them. . . . Young people go into prison . . . as youths and they come out as hardened criminals, and it's not a good thing."

Just goes to show even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The War on Drugs has been such a colossal waste of money, manpower, and lives, that it's absolutely insane to comprehend. Especially for pot.

If the Republicans were smart, they'd get off the immigration high horse and court the Latino vote, which they could get.  Many Latino voters are Republican, especially the Cuban immigrants. Don't be surprised to see Marco Rubio as the Republican Presidential nominee in 2016.

Obama picking Daley as Chief of Staff certainly indicates a more pro-business/centrist tact than the past 2 years.  The State of the Union will be interesting, will we get "The Era of Big Government is over" part 2 speech?

If people knew what big government really was, then maybe that'd be accurate. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who rail against big government are like the guy who wrote Obama and told him to keep the government out of Medicare.

Just heard:

Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (a Democrat, 40 years) was holding a constituent meeting at the grocery store when she and others were shot.

That's just insane.  I know it doesn't matter, but I'm curious to see if the shooter was out for her, or if this was random.

@Onhell, if you read here, how far is that from you?  I know-- Tuscon is a big city.

it's only a 10-15 minute drive... very close. My mom's bank is on that street corner... shocking. my Facebook is exploding with comments from folks about it, my phone doesn't stop vibrating. Even my dad, in Mexico, texted me about it... it's insane.

P.S There will be a press conference from the hospital in 20 minutes or so.

Wow...its so weird when it hits that close to home.  I'm shocked from here, 1700 miles away.  I just read on MSN that she was 'supposedly' shot in the head... its a very sad thing.
