USA Politics

Brief thoughts:

Democrats let this happen. Hillary should've never been the nominee and she and her campaign were way too overconfident and smug toward the opposing side. Calling the opposition's voters deplorable is the sort of thing that creates a silent majority and lets this happen.

And as I've said many times in this thread: Basing this campaign on Trump being worse cost them the election. When you're an undecided/uninformed voter are you going to vote for the candidate with an enthusiastic base and a (albeit hollow) set of plans or the candidate with a half enthused base with no especially clear message beyond "the other guy is worse"? I still maintain that Hillary is a far superior candidate to Donald, but I am more angry at Hillary, her campaign, and the DNC for letting this happen. This should've been a cakewalk.

Well said. This is a massive failure for the Democrats. And looking at the reactions, they're still oblivious to the problem. Putting the blame for the loss on "dumbass Americans". Well, the same dumbass Americans elected Obama for two terms. Obviously not the core of the problem.

Democratic Party needs to look at this election and recognize that the people got sick of the establishment and the status quo. Sick enough to elect a guy like Trump.

Precisely, Trump is a complete arse but folk are not being listened to by the political elite. You can't talk about the struggles of people on low incomes whilst wearing a $4k armami suit.

I think this a crucial factor of both this and the Brexit vote. Working class people effectively disenfranchised by the lack of choice, and lack of policy that actually goes some way towards directly addressing the issues affecting them, are voting to shake things up. I just hope that politicians of all persuasions take that on board and think things through properly, not simply follow the easy route of demonising select groups of people who are easy to blame for all ills. I don't think Trump is lacking in expensive suits either.

Here's my prediction for what's going to happen in the next four years.

Domestically, things will go on the way they have been so far. Obama didn't end school shootings, racism or poverty, Clinton wouldn't have, Trump won't. For two years, there will be something like a functional government that will probably lower taxes and cut investment in infrastructure and public services, all the while racking up even more debt. The rust belt will realise that they could have used foreign investors that Trump scared off (whether or not NAFTA was abolished), and so will other regions of the US. The Democrats will win the midterm elections, bringing the government to a standstill again for two years, and a new charismatic candidate will emerge who may or may not win the hearts of some people. "Clinton" will become a dirty word and the GOP may split, perhaps temporary ending bipartisanism in some parts of the country. Trump will lose the 2020 elections, and that will be it.
Internationally, TTIP won't happen. The US and the EU might drift apart a bit, but Trump and Putin may decide to cooperate in the Middle East. The Iran deal will be cancelled and new sanctions employed. Trump will realise he needs to be friendly to China a bit. He won't make any personal effort for peace in Israel/Palestine. There may be American drones in a few more countries.

Sounds about right. The future of TTIP will be interesting. I still wouldn't be comfortable being from one of the sections of the population in America that Trump likes the criticise.

Well, the world has taken another right to the chops. 2016 - the year of democratic insurgencies. Now we see what comes next - and we hope that Trump doesn't fuck it up to the point of no return.

If Trump keeps things sane with China, I think U.S. foreign policy could be more peaceful than it'd be in a Hillary Clinton one. Hillary was and is very aggressive on foreign policy. Can't bank on it though, it's Trump.

First time in my life I went to bed feeling anxious about the state of the world.

Obamacare will be gone. The environmental problems will get worse instead of addressed (increase of old school industry). Hate will be seeded. A wall will arise on the southern border. More division. More polarization. More distrust and hate towards immigrants and muslims... Probably no change in weapon access. The list goes on. On the long term, this is very bad. It's even worse that people don't get it.

At the wheel: a dangerous pathological liar who can do whatever he likes. Blind Americans are in the majority. They find suspicious e-mails more important. And thank fuck you FBI, for just enough interfering with unimportant stuff Americans were fooled by!

Everyone needs to calm down. Perun's reaction is one of the few I've read that isn't hysterical. I'm in New York today, and the Times' reaction is downright apocalyptic. It's silly. America elected one rich megalomaniac instead of another. Get over it.

And no, I didn't vote for Trump either. I don't think he will be a particularly good President, but in an odd way I feel good (sort of) about this result and what it says about America. Trump got the American people to reject the establishment party line in BOTH major political parties. In many ways, Trump was an Independent candidate in Republican garb, and many Americans voted for him for precisely that reason. In the long run, shaking up the parties will probably be good for America.

This result also belies the conspiracy theory that there is an Iluminati-type organization that controls politics and world affairs. Obviously not. Non-Coast-Dwelling Americans listened to every major media outlet tell them that Trump is horrible and should/would obviously lose. And they said, fuck you, don't tell me what to think. That independent streak is what makes Americans unique in the world.

But I could do without the racism.

Yeah. Saying fuck you is more important than anything else. Sure man. Pat each other on the backs. Well done.

Not at all man, not at all. It's the easy, underbelly manner of voting. The extremely egoist vote, without sense of morals, or caring for anyone/anything else.

Good luck with going back to the fifties, conservatives!

Let Trump take his responsibility. We'll talk again in a while.

Well done Trump. It worked. You fooled them all!
