USA Politics

This is factually untrue. The videos you posted both have a lovely kernel of truth to them, which is that there is an onus on the individual person to not act in a way that provokes negative attention. Lots of people do this, and that's right. But Travis, you're making a false assumption that this applies to all situations. The fact is that black people are not treated the same.

One of my favourite writers has written about the topic extensively, pulling from a book called The New Jim Crow which explains how the USA is creating a permanent underclass of criminals.

Ed is an extreme civil libertarian. You might not like his stance on left-right things, but he is a very intellectually consistent writer who calls out Obama as much as he does the GOP. This is a clear evidence-based argument.
Well, I still feel the way I do and that a majority of black people would be treated the same if they changed the way they are and didn't do things to bring it upon themselves. If they want the racism and stereotyping to stop, they need to stop living and acting in ways that bring on racism and stereotyping in the first place. They do it to themselves. Like I said, none of this matters anyway because chances are very good that nothing is ever going to change in our lifetime. Plus, the impact any of this has on my life is so indirect that it doesn't affect me in any way.

If they would do like those videos suggest, it would help change those types of statistics and cause others not to be so stereotypical and racist. Sadly, it wouldn't put an end to all of the stereotyping and racism that exists, but it would definitely help.

Seriously, man. Don't you think the onus is on everyone to realize what their own biases are? Everyone has them. Everyone does. You have some biases, I have some. The key is to think about it, and to realize you can fuck up.

If black people would do like the people in those videos are suggesting and change their ways and how they act and such, it would help the rest of the country to not be so stereotypical and racist against them as described in the 3 Jim Crow links you gave. I feel I've made every point I possibly can to the best of my ability on this topic so I think we should now agree to disagree and move on.

If you're not a pot smoker and it was made legal where you are, would you try it? I am a pot smoker, but it didn't take too much convincing from my friend for me to try it so I probably would if I wasn't.

If black people would do like the people in those videos are suggesting and change their ways and how they act and such, it would help the rest of the country to not be so stereotypical and racist against them as described in the 3 Jim Crow links you gave.
What do black people do that justifies people being racist or stereotypical toward them?

The recent rioting and looting is a great example. And if they didn't do stuff that brings those attitudes towards them, there wouldn't be other black people putting out the videos I posted telling them they need to change their ways. OK, I'm TRULY done with this and will not be replying to anything else that's said about it. I'm truly set in my ways about this and there's no way you'll convince me to change how I feel.

No, I never said that and that's not what I mean. By rioting, they give a perception of themselves that they are angry and violent which is already a stereotype about them that exists.

If black people would do like those videos suggest, it would give law enforcement reasons to be less racist.

Anyway, I'm done. I've made every point I can and you all already know how I feel and I know how you feel so let's just agree to disagree.

This is pathetic. Yeah, I know Obama did not start this practice, but at this time Hungary is fairly important vis-a-vis Russia and Ukraine and seems to be drifting more and more into Russia's orbit. I am sure this is not really a good statement about how much we value relations with them.

Senate sneers as soap opera exec is confirmed Ambassador to Hungary
Bell — daughter-in-law of the late William Bell, who started soaps ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ and ‘The Young and the Restless’ — helped raise $2.1 million for Obama’s reelection campaign and was slammed as being ‘totally unqualified’ for the gig by Sen. John McCain

President Obama’s pick for Ambassador to Hungary, a producer for “Bold and the Beautiful” who raised millions for Obama’s campaign, was confirmed to the diplomatic post on Tuesday, but only after being deemed “totally unqualified” for the job.

The nominee, Colleen Bradley Bell, is not only a soap opera producer, she is soap royalty.

Her husband Bradley Bell is scion of soap opera mogul William Bell. The late William Bell worked as a head writer at “Days of Our Lives” before striking gold with his own series “Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Young and the Restless” and the now-defunct “Another World.”

Bell has also served as a Kennedy Center trustee since 2012, alongside Caroline Kennedy, who is U.S. Ambassador to Japan.

But Bell’s Hollywood pedigree didn’t give her much cachet on Capitol Hill.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) watched Bell squirm during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jan. 16 — pressing her to veer from her prepared testimony before the Senate panel in order to name strategic U.S. interests in Hungary.

“Obviously you don't want to answer my question,” he said after she failed to deliver a direct answer.

Weeks after grilling her, McCain determined the TV exec was “totally unqualified” to serve U.S. interests abroad, citing her as an “egregious example” of the White House rewarding top donors with diplomatic stints to enliven their dinner party conversations.

Bell has personally donated thousands to Democratic campaigns and helped raise more than $2.1 million for Obama’s reelection campaign.

“This is a very important country where bad things are going on. Ms. Bell’s experiences have been largely related to producing television soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful.” I’m sure television viewing is important in Hungary, but the fact is that this nominee is totally unqualified for this position,” McCain said on Tuesday, during remarks on the Senate floor before Bell was confirmed 52-42, along party lines.

The White House defended Bell, insisting she “has the President’s confidence that she will do an excellent job representing the United States.”

When asked about her qualifications, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest steered clear of mentioning her soap opera roots and instead touted “her own distinguished private sector career” in comments on Tuesday.

“She is somebody who obviously has succeeded in the business world,” Earnest said.

“She is somebody that the President has confidence will be able to maintain our relationship with the government and the people of Hungary ... she was chosen is because the President has complete confidence in her ability to represent the United States in that country.

She really should have taken a few moments to review the Wikipedia page on Hungary at least before her confirmation hearing

Idiot

Here we go again, and now the decision looks even more brutal since it's all on camera. May justice really be ruled, for once.

Eric Garner chokehold: Federal investigation launched

... The New York case sparked attention when a video of Officer Daniel Pantaleo arresting Mr Garner surfaced in July.
In the incident, asthmatic Garner, 43, was heard on the video shouting "I can't breathe!" as a number of officers restrained him on a street in New York. ...

...

... In contrast to Ferguson, there is video evidence showing what happened in Staten Island. New York's medical examiner had already ruled that the death of Eric Garner was a homicide, and that the chokehold contributed to it.

Even though America has a black president and a black attorney general, Eric Holder, this will reinforce the widespread feeling in poor African-American communities that the criminal justice system is weighted against them, and that the law is not colour-blind. ...

This makes me very sad. How many more bastards are there in the force, protected by racism and a sinister system? At least, there will be investigation and -call me naive but- this time I have faith something better will come out of it.

Where should I go riot ... obviously that Grand Jury was wrong, I know because some people said so :)

White teen killed by black cop in Alabama mirrors Ferguson

A two-year-old case involving the shooting death of an unarmed 18-year-old white man by a black police officer is gaining attention on social media in the wake of this week’s protests and rioting in Ferguson, Missouri.

Gilbert Collar, a white, unarmed 18-year-old under the influence of drugs was shot and killed Oct. 6, 2012, by Officer Trevis Austin, who is black, in Mobile, Alabama. Despite public pressure for an indictment, a Mobile County grand jury refused to bring charges against Officer Austin, concluding that the officer acted in self-defense
