UK Politics

Aye, you certainly would expect any SNP backing of Labour (e.g. helping bring them to power) would probably be conditional on Labour allowing for another indy vote at some point. Unless that happens, I can't see any UK Government allowing another legally binding independence vote for the foreseeable future.

I think the European Union is trash right now, especially with Articles 11 and 13, but the way BREXIT is being handled is shaping it into a complete utter mess.

Went to buy a fridge today; found it really, really hard to get hold of one...
Not big enough to store lots of food that will be sparse in 2019?
Health Secretary just mumbled through an interview saying that he hadn't expected to be one of the biggest purchasers of fridges in the world. They're buying up fridge units so that they can stock pile cold-supply medicines. I'm not sure how the public are meant to feel about this information...

That he's being really organised maybe? :p

Agreed. Shit word.
Brexit can fuck off altogether, most overrated new story since swine flu.

Its like watching slow motion shit flying towards a big fan; will it hit the fan? What happens if it does? Should we stay and watch?
Im bored stupid of it but cant seem to look away for too long.

Apparently there's an online petition now demanding that there be dual legal tender of Euro and £ in Ireland North and "South" (don't know where that is, they must mean Cork?).

It has 250,000 signatures!!

Oh yeah, the exchange rates will be fixed at the time of the deal!!! So leave the Eu but join the Euro effectively.

It is what it is, you know (i.e. an attempt to convince rebel Tories and other MPs to back her deal).

Most people in the UK are tired by now of the whole thing and I am definitely one of them: what a massive waste of time and taxpayers' money.

Let's get on with it, leave the EU, and focus all the efforts in implementing all the policies that should have been introduced over the last couple of years.

Or stay, put thoughts of leaving on ice for a few years until it can be revisited in a more sensible manner.

This week will be crazy. After parliament rejects the deal tomorrow Theresa has three days to come back to parliament with another plan. That could be an amended deal or a second referendum. Labour want a general election but I doubt they can negotiate anything better. Whatever happens the rest of the world should make sure they've got plenty of popcorn.

That would be taking the piss. You ask the people what they think about something, a majority tells you they want to leave, and then you put things on ice? That would be a joke and I tell you this as someone who, even though is not a fan of the EU, would have preferred to stay.

Yes. Because the majority is much better informed now (I hope).

It would be wise.

You would have preferred to stay, for some sensible reasons, perhaps? But now underbelly anger has taken over?

So if they agree with your views they are better informed than if they do not? Your arrogance knows no limits! :D

I for one, dislike the EU more now than before, especially taking into account their view of what is state aid (that would make socialist policies, like renationalising the railways impossible).

It would be wise.

The arrogance again?

Try telling that to, for example, the millions of people who have been shat on by successive Tory and Labour governments and were told by that same people that they had to vote to Remain in the EU. Why do that if your quality of life is much worse than it was before? Many people who had been ignored for a long time had a chance to express their views with their vote and, much to the surprise of Westminster, the outcome was not what the establishment expected.

You would have preferred to stay, for some common sense reasons, perhaps? But now underbelly anger has taken over?

No anger here, just a desire for the waste of money involved and the political noise surrounding it to stop, whilst at the same time respecting the result of a democratic decision. I was not happy with the outcome of the referendum, but that is what happens in democracy: your option is not always the winning one. Time to star thinking about some other policies instead.

Disclaimer: all references to arrogance have been made with my tongue firmly in my cheek. :D

At the end of the day, like GoC says, it was a vote, and trying to put the brakes on that just because the losing side believes it knows best, isn't democratic.
Populist, reactionary, anti-establishment, anti-everything sentiment, wrapped up in a big disenfranchised bundle of discontent, has been bubbling under for a long time, and this one issue of EU membership became the sharp focus for that, as a rare chance for voters to directly affect policy.
