Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Im counting down through songs on my studio albums (144songs), until 50 ill do 5 a day. then 3 a day down to 20, 2 a day down to 10 ending with 1 a day.

#144 - 2am - ok were on the road, the only redeeming feature of this song for me is the solo that i do actually quite like. the rest however i find lacking alot, blaze rather than dark just sounds depressing here and with its repetetive sound it may suit the yuppie story (for a better one see man on the edge) but hard very hard to listen too.

#143 - Quest for Fire - and not even for that opening lyric (ok partly), its very cheesy and not really containing any impressive guitar work to redeem its aweful story. i like some jokey tracks like pass the jam but off the studio album and for some reason i feel they were being serious here anyway... sigh  ;)

#142 - The angel and the gambler - The one thing that ruined this song forever for me is that video of them playing on a totp like show with a substitute janick that was trying to emulate his stage antics . I have no idea how steve allowed it. in addition to this its none remarkeable in its story and in terms of that gambling should never be related to religion even if the songs underlying theme is rather risk taking, or am i overanalysing?

#141 - The Apparition - tell me you can feel me, no i cant feel ya atall... its so slow and follows such a linear pace, everything about the songs sound feels held back. the solo is good for the last part but its hard to find one that isnt. thwn after it straight back into that slow trundling, this really is an open and shut case and this makes me glad they now highly favour tempo changes.  <_<

i think it suffers from being one of the iconicly bad ones and so sticks out like a sore thumb. musically its also poor by maiden standards and its only one of those first three i give a 4/10            +im a bit of a nut for lyrical story and how music compliments that as i dont play an instrument you wont get too much comment on chords or that end of things  :)

i sometimes like a bit of catchy cheese, but here theres a thin line (between love and hate)

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

 i think i should prepare for someone to claim blasphemy at every post i do

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

I can agree with 2 of the 4. 2 AM is a far better song than you give it credit for - depending on your life experiences - and The Angel and the Gambler is one of those tracks that is going to always be polarizing. It's in my top 60 usually.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

The Angel & The Gambler grew on me, and I really like its edited version. It's currently my second favorite song from Virtual XI, surpassed only by Futureal.

The Apparition is horrible.

amen with the apparition, and taatg has an edited version?   do tell. i dunno it may grow on me but right now its in a lump of songs down here at the bottom that i just cant grasp and i do try. and to LC's post 2am, i can see how the sound in some ways comes to reflect his mood in the song and i briefly chucked that into my review but even with that, for me its not really a subject i can get my teeth into enough to get past that its a bit slow. for now all i can say is some of the light guitar work is pleasing but as a song it doesnt do much for me whatever mood im in.
In regards to personal experience i dont even work yet... ive come back from a couple of parties, oh and a maiden gig at 2am but then i went to bed  ;)

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

I'm not saying you have to like it as it is set up. I'm just saying that there are days that song has really clicked with me. Sometimes I like my music to reflect a little depression.

Yeah i was just trying to say what i didnt put in my review (the typing system on my nintendo was driving me nuts) I feel that if when they put it together they though through that a depressed sound and repetetive manner would reflect the characters life then it would be a great arty piece... nominate for english literature in schools   but that just as a song to listen to its probably best suited to how you pointed out, maybe itll pop up some day when im feeling down and redeem itself in my eyes then (ill try it out next time on your advice  :smartarse:) .
#140 - The Unbeliever - Blaze shows little energy until around 2:20 and everything feels very drawn out, as a rule i dont mind blaze but this is one of those songs that i feel hurt his time with maiden, there are a few further up the list that i like... honest. There arent any really interesting melodies but in the background very low in the mix there is a nice little bit of guitar that comes in somewhere close to 4:30. other than that though it all seems very low effort and basic on all fronts and oh so repetetive (the bad kind)

#139 - The Assassin - better watch out, cause im the assassin its many things this song, it has great potential and some of that shows through but once it gets to the bits ive quoted it somehow makes me both smile (and/or laugh) and hate it intensely at the same time  its very mysterious. But what i do like is the harmonising voices which is the bit that makes me smile and i dont know why and the instrumental mid section isnt all that bad.

#138 - Another Life - Its punchy, but so are so many of those early dianno numbers and this is the very worst of them. Some great guitar work yes but it doesnt seem to fit together and the tempo switches way too much for me and musically it sounds all over the place in many parts. Lyrically aswell i feel anyone could throw that together. its only saving grace is energy which it has in bucketloads.

#137 - Genghis Khan - Oh still on killers, Im a bit of a lyrics man but some instrumentals really get me. unfortunately theyre normaly love or hate with me, i dont passionately hate it but its REALLY forgetable for me. theres no part of it i can hear and instantly thing GENGHIS! like with say... transylvania that is unmistakably great. The drums here are good though i will say that, well done Burr but the guitar work doesnt amaze me and on an instrumental they really have to step it up and work hard to create a story that i dont get here (everythings too OK).

#136 - Fear is the key - Musically its a bit like being on a boat in a choppy sea  B) just imagine it to that tune, then while your on there someones telling you about societies problems... its only a matter of time till you run to the edge green  the story isnt that bad but it seems very long. interesting story and imagery starting to come in with guitars weaving through here and there but the underlying beat stays unchanged and very slow throughout making a 5:35 song seem so much longer and drawn out. Recent thematically similar songs did much better in my ratings.

Im not looking forward to the next few days cause i think theres a few major blasphemies there  ;)

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

You've just posted a Blasphemy already :P

Genghis Khan is much better than what you are saying and I can instantly think Genghis with that galloping riff (in my mind it really feels like a bunch of horses riding). It in my top 60 or so (can't check now but I know it's not lower than that).

Agree entirely, in fact I think it's the most memorable of IM's instrumentals. I think it's their best. Foro will probably have some words for this one  :ninja:

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

I would rate TAATG a bit higher, as well as 2 A.M., but otherwise good choices!

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Your list is horrible on so many levels that it's not even funny but whatever makes you feel better (though i can't imagine why) ....
Not even worth arguing about it...

Nah, that would be Transylvania (top 25 song for me), although Genghis Khan does get a very honourable second. Playing Transylvania now in tribute however.  :shred:

And you are bagging this guy for his opinion why? I mean if you don't agree with his opinion (which is fine, because everyone has a different opinion) you can say so with reasons why but don't have to brazenly insult the guy.

Its not that im saying its a bad song, just that everything that follows is better than it. it has good bits but from an instrumental i need something spectacular for the reasons i said..  at least i gave my reason and didnt just say 'aww thats clearly just shit ::)
Transylvania places a fair bit higher as does losfer words.

and @black thunder, Prior to like 3days ago my display name was Jonnytron and ive been a member since May 2010 post avg roughly once every other day  :)  HI!!!
at least only genghis was really disagreed on this time, the next one could be an issue. But at least when we reach that top 50 there might be some agreements  <-always thought that smile looked nervous

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

#135 - When two worlds collide - This is the post ive been dreading since i started   I can see why some might really like this song but for me while maybe the first minute or so gets some great music out there and Blaze starts to develop a story. The rest of the song consists of repeating patterns with when two worlds collide, the anger the pain etc. and i personally imagine the song benefitting from more imagery of an event maybe in a song structure like WTWWB. What a song that would be   i suppose a song that wasnt developed enough for my tastes. That prog coming through though

#134 - Tailgunner - NPFTD tracks are hit and miss for me, and this missed a fair bit. I really dont like the solo beginning in the mid section that i think is Janicks, it doesnt seem to fit the song and nor does the whole mood. Seems way too happy to be describing the precarious job description of a tail gunner. And it all too well shows the gungho war tracks of the early bruce period that... im not a big fan of.

#133 - The Fugitive - The only really interesting thing throughout this is the instrumental section beginning at 4:38, the rest again repeats itself and is very uniform which i really wouldnt mind if there was some sweet melody running through it and there isnt so it really  :ninja: bores me quite alot.

#132 - Dont look to the eyes of a stranger - I really like this songs slow melodies and building sound through the start then the drums into the fast (run away) section, its a pretty good show of what Blaze maiden could achieve. But now the bad bit for me, it then slows straight back down into an awkward melody that detracts from the earlier. After that it feels very standard practice for me and drawn out for the story its meant to tell. This really didnt need to be so long. Again progs beginnings in maiden. One of those tracks that show longer isnt always better.

#131 - Die with your boots on - A surprise entry from POM, I only recently decided with myself what it all meant and i think its about trying to convince soldiers to not hesitate or listen to those 'prophets of disaster'   im a wee bit lost, otherwise good energy but one of those tongue in cheek sounding songs that expend quality. i dont think bruce is at his best here atall. No great guitar work but i suppose its a bit of a Maiden party track   POMs Alchemist maybe.

Album #15 - Virtual XI -
Virtual-XI.jpg

Something about this album lacks alot from Xfactor in terms of Blaze albums. I think its only saving grace is The Clansman, the album generally feels like a mash up of ideas with no real theme and alot of the songs dragged out much longer than is required. i Give it an average of 6.00 meaning its a OK to good album but below average for Maiden (imo). This however for me does represent a period of Maiden (steve   :)) changing the sound so outside the music i think this was an important step in reaching the Current frontier so to speak.

(this post begins the large chunk of songs rated 7's which i label approching average for maiden, aka. just dont ring my bell   also making them pretty hard to explain my choice.)

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

You should rename this thread to "Tron's Maiden Blasphemy Countdown" :D

Die With Your Boots On so low?! O.o :(
