Pure Evil VS. Red Barchetta was the toughest pairing yet. Ultimately, it just comes down to which I enjoy more, and that'd be Pure Evil. Barchetta is a monstrously awesome song, as well.

I don't see anything special regarding Pure Evil, heard it more than enough. Then again, I dislike power metal apart from a few songs.

What is it then? Thrash? I can't say I love thrash apart from a few bands (namely Metallica, Megadeth and Testament).

If I said it's part lovable thrash and part power metal, would you say that you generally dislike power/thrash bands with a few exceptions?

Yea Pure Evil isn't even remotely close to Power Metal.

Well Thrash and Power Metal are actually closely linked, but yes I consider Pure Evil (along with both the debut and Stormrider albums) to be Thrash. Burnt Offerings is kinda hard for me to classify and I'd consider that Dark Saga is the first album with significant Power Metal influences (of course Barlow is a pure Power Metal vocalist though).

You may not like trash, you may not like power metal, but I would not say this band is "purely" one of these.

As the whole of Night of the Stormrider, Pure Evil is a fantastic combination of Maiden's and Metallica best assets. Adventurous and epic songs with tempo and rhythm changes and strong melodies, delivered with galloping rhythms (Maiden) leaning at the same time heavily on very strong guitar riffs (Metallica).

Yeah, that's the biggest surprise this round really. A good fun thrash track vs a masterpiece of music....

Maiden is my favorite band and Metallica is definitely Top 10. But Iced Earth's songs sound too similar and nothing special to me, with a few exceptions.

Yes. I find power metal to be cheesy and pretentious. And many thrash bands sound the same, the whole "We have lots of riffs and play fast!" attitude gets old after a while.

These are general comments that I would make myself on later albums but the earlier work is not of the same sort. Songs with variation, containing many exciting and melodic parts. It's aggressive and fast, but that doesn't mean that lots of it is the same. How anyone -with a love for Maiden- can shrug when hearing Pure Evil's awesome rhythm patterns is beyond my belief.

Since I have only heard you making generic comments on Iced Eath I am not 100% sure if you have heard this song. Here goes:
Awake your neighbours and play it on f*cking 10!

I didn't say Pure Evil was a bad song. It's a cool song but not something I'd willingly listen to in my spare time.

Definitely not. Great atmosphere throughout the song, shining moments are the intro and the outro.

As much as I like variation, I don't give value to it as much as you do. I used to do it, though. Atmosphere comes first for me. Pure Evil lacks atmosphere. Actually, lack of atmosphere is the prime reason why I don't like thrash.

IMO there are two kinds of power metal:
US power metal, that originated in the 80's, which was dark, guitar-oriented, not cheesy and didn't use much keyboards,
and European power metal, that (IMO) started with Helloween's second album, which included much cheesier lyrics, lighter mood and non-agressive clean vocals (for example, Kiske).
Also, even though it's weird, bands from Europe can be USPM, and US bands can be EUPM (like Kamelot).

Iced Earth is the former. I just don't like using the term power metal to describe them cause people automatically connect power metal to Sonata Arctica and similar cheesy suckfest bands. Power metal gets badmouthed altogether even though not all of it is cheesy. You can't really put Dante's Inferno and any song from Sonata's last album in the same genre. Plus, prog rock/metal is definitely the most pretentious music there is :P

Flash, Pure Evil has atmospheric moments, nicely altered with the heavier parts. I could even say when they happen, but I am sure you know them yourself if you know the song.

I think Iced Earth started off more heavily weighted towards Thrash than Power while not really being either, then steadily became more Power Metal album-by-album.
