If you actually believe that, I suggest you read the Sign of the Cross commentary thread to find out that lots of people love the track on its own merits.Sign of the Cross is only top 10 because of the Bruce RiR version. Sorry, Blaze's voice knocks any song down 30 spots. He's just not a good singer for Maiden.
It's funny how everyone says this for FOTD and certain other songs, because personally 14 times out of 15 I'll prefer the studio version to the live ones (with Afraid To Shoot Strangers being an exception).IMHO Sign Of The Cross suffers from the same sindrome as FOTD. The studio versions of both tracks are a bit stale. But live they are complete monsters.

You might believe that. But I'm trying to tell you that your belief is not the dominant one - which is fine. It's a great song and is legitimately top 10.. when Bruce sings it. But on the studio version Blaze's poor performance kills it.

Not for me!I am sure that the popularity of this song was greatly boosted by Bruce and RiR. Same with The Clansman.
I don't particularly care - however you decide. Lots of people give FOTD a bump for the live version.I just want to know one thing @LooseCannon ? Should the votes be based on studio tracks only or on any professional recording of particular track?
Then I will again encourage you to read the historic thread.I am sure that the popularity of this song was greatly boosted by Bruce and RiR. Same with The Clansman.

Just read through the entire thread, and only five or so people even mentioned the RiR version, and when they did, they had already proclaimed that the studio version was one of the best things Maiden ever made. Shit, I've never even taken the time to listen to the RiR version because the original is so goddamn good. Just saying. Why? I am certain opinions are colored by the vastly superior RiR version. If I'm wrong so be it.

Yes, primarily due to very strong results in the 00s. The Clansman scored higher in 2016 than Sign of the Cross.Sign of the Cross ranks above quite literally everything off Seventh Son, AMOLAD, and TBOS?
I have to agree with this. There's no way RIR didn't cause a reevaluation of the songs for many people who wrote Maiden off during the Blaze years. Why? I am certain opinions are colored by the vastly superior RiR version. If I'm wrong so be it.
I'm not denying that. I am saying that the reason it ended up so high in the rankings is because of the strong support of people for whom this is not true.I have to agree with this. It also makes me appreciate the time and effort Maiden put into their lyrics. If Bruce wanted to write about religion, it would have been easy to do it in a simple and straightforward manner. Taking the time to research those symbols shows how much he cares about creating something unique. I also saw an interview somewhere in which it was said that Adrian did some research on Pashendale while writing that song ... how many bands care enough about their songs and fans to hit the library while songwriting?!?
What a killer song! It's even better played live, and thanks to Mav I finally understand what the cryptic lyrics are trying to tell me. Awesome song, one of Maiden's best
This is one of my favorite songs off Piece of Mind. I love the intro and the heavy drum and bass bit that occurs throughout the song. The lyrics of this song are especially good. The part at 2:15 is my favorite. As for the secret of the hangman I think its as Raven said, its a reference to 'revelation', why else would the song be called 'Revelations'?
This song is one of the best of the 80's, and surely the best song on Piece of Mind. Bruce is one fire, great performance here, Steve is all ober the place as usuall, Nicko drumming is strong and the guitar work is something really special, the verses and the harmonies on this one are so beautiful.
It’s too bad this Chesterton guy has been dead for a hundred years because he and Bruce write some pretty good songs together. Seriously, this piece marks another step forward in Maiden songwriting. No chorus, several parts, all of them interesting. One of Bruce’s best performances ever. The harmony guitars just over the five-minute mark just make you want to replay them again and again. But what really sets this song apart is the lyrics. They are working on a whole different level.
This song is nothing short of magical, creating a mystical atmosphere that is perfectly complemented by lyrics that only Bruce could write. It just seems to take you everywhere...
This song is simply amazing. Bruce's performance here is epic, dripping with emotional force. The lyrics are cryptic and subtle, and work all the better for that. Bruce really seems to have a lot of effort into this song. The guitar work is also excellent here, with some suitably beautiful melodies. Nicko continues his superb drumming. The song is damn near perfect.
This is the kind of song that Steve would experiment with in the 1990s - slower, rhythmic, methodical. But he never quite managed to hit this particular note.
The guitar work is simply beautiful. Dave and Adrian sound mournful here, simple progressions that are made perfect. But the lyrics - puzzling and meaningful. Inspired and delightful. And Bruce gives what is perhaps the best vocal performance of his career, matched only by the emotional ballad Tears of the Dragon from his second solo album.
Just magnificent.
