Very nice top ten remaining. Some obvious. A couple killer deeper tracks. And a bit of a dark horse in TBOS title track. 3 from my personal top 10. Whatever ends up being #1, great job LC and a huuuuge gracias for taking time and putting this together!!! !!

Consistency. While this track has only three Top 10 entries in the all-time list, it is a very consistent 9.00+ song, and that's what pushes it into the Top 10. The lowest rank it has ever gotten is 18th (in 2016, it should be noted). There can be no doubt that with results like this, Aces High is an all-time classic track. This song receives nearly perfect marks - only one person in the comments rated it below a 9 (looking at you @Mosh) - and the chorus, energy, and solos are cited as a high point. Aces High will surely continue to soar for years to come.

Choice comments:

Yes, this song is great. It has a combination of finesse and raw power, rather like the Spitfires the track tries to emulate. Bruce is at his best here, one of his top 5 vocal performances in Maiden for sure. The solos are great, the music rocks, you can close your eyes and almost be in the Battle of Britain.

I can never listen to Aces High without remembering it was the first thing I ever saw Maiden play in all its live glory. It is the perfect album and concert opener and epitomizes the band’s rocking side. It’s short but it’s still epic in the way it rolls, turns, dives and lives to fly. Great chorus, great energy. All-time great song.

Aces High is a great rocker and the perfect album / concert opener, but it's not one of those instant 10s to me. Bruce sounds great on vocals, the solos are excellent, but I find it lacks just a little something.

My favorite song on the album, and one of the band's best openers. This is an adreneline charged piece of music that creates yet another great mind movie... it's breathless pace conjures up visions of diving Messerschmitts and swooping Spitfires. Nicko's machine gun effect is worth noting and listening for.

This is my least favorite opener. It is simplistic maiden at its best and apart from good solos and lyrics, there isn't much else to it.

I love this song and it is a great intro to a magnificent album. Powerslave is tied right now with NOTB as the best two albums. I can't decide. It's like picking a favorite kid.

A catchy, sing along chorus that gets you up and ready. They started Flight 666 with this song and it was a good choice.

Aces High has always been a favorite of mine since I 1st heard it about 10 years ago while I was 1st discovering Maiden. Between the Egyptian themed album and the very interesting song title I was just destined to love the song lol.
After all this time I could never get tired of Aces High. Everything from the drums to the vocals is amazing!

Starting the 2nd day of my Maiden marathon with possibly the best opening track of any album. Always loved the overall feel of this one. Adrian's solo is a thing of beauty. I'll clasify this track as amazing.

Personally, I think it deserves to be higher but I'm not gonna complain about where it's landed. It came in the 20s on the list I compiled, so this is a pleasant surprise.

In 2016, this was your fifth favourite track, Maidenfans - a triumphant entrance for the clear-cut masterpiece of the newest Iron Maiden album. Will it flag and fail? I don't know. There's often some "buyer's remorse" on the new albums, but I suspect the polish on this one will take a long time to wear off. The current Maidenfans generation is a big fan of Gers/Harris epics (see the upswing on Dance of Death for another example) and I think this one is going to stand the test of time, unlike the Mayan civilization from whence it takes its motifs.

Prophecy and sky gods, the sun and moon/passing of empires will come true soon/falling of ages, forest of kings/the lost book of souls - destruction begins!

Obviously we don't have a lot of data yet on this album, but whereas some consider The Final Frontier to be a bit of a stagger on Iron Maiden's reunion victory lap, The Book of Souls clearly has re-asserted the band as a masterpiece-making machine, with no less than three songs that have debuted in the Top 25. It could be that these tracks are less-well regarded as the years go on, but I personally think at least two of those three will stand the test of time.

Choice comments:

I think this song is straight up filthy metal good. When that verse kicks in I'm seeing Bruce back in full fledged spiked gear. The way he sings it is perfect. One of the best Maiden tunes in the history of Maiden and my favorite title track since Powerslave.

I've always found Janick to be very underrated as a songwriter, and here with Steve, he has managed to totally outdo the sole Steve-penned epic on the album. It irks me no end when people say Janick should have been ejected when H returned to the band, because to me, he has proved himself time and again to be a very worthy contributor to the band's illustrious catalogue. This song is yet another example of how great he is. Classic Maiden-isms abound in the latter half of the song, with even a nod to Losfer Words in there too! The intro and outro are very atmospheric, the chorus is highly memorable, and the main riff is an absolute monster made even more effective due to it's Eastern tinges. Which is an aspect which continues in the verses, with Bruce's vocals alongside that musical backdrop harkening back to the mystical magic of "Powerslave".

This song is fantastic! Everything about it is. From the first riff, through the pre-chorus to The Best. Chorus. On. The. Album. Period. IT'S SO MASSIVE. One of the best, most epic choruses in the reunion era (or even ever). And the Ascending the throne part is also mindblowing. Brilliant song, I love it. It was outstanding on the first listen and still grows even more. I don't know which is better anymore - this one or IESF... Real gems.

I dig the acoustic intro quite a bit. I was listening to this intro with my - new - girlfriend. Album playing in the background. The songs starts she goes like " This intro is as spooky as the first song's outro". And this is the thing with this album. I think their intros are quite fitting after a very long time of having them used just to delay the song's beginning.

It's absolutely everything I was hoping for in a Janick epic song. Great, ominous intro that (thankfully) manages to not 100% sound copied from the previous album. A heavy mid paced stomper for the first part with some incredible vocals by Bruce and a really majestic and memorable chorus. Then once they hit the gas it totally flies! Sure it's similar to Losfer Words/Montsegur but it totally works.

I just wish the harmonies that come up towards the end were repeated a bit more as they are so gorgeous.

The Book Of Souls is going break quite high into my Maiden top 10, that's for sure. The best song Gers/Harris have written, without a shadow of doubt, even better than Dance Of Death.

This one goes to 11.

Seven Top 10 entries and nothing lower than 14th. Wow. This song is clearly a beloved one, an absolute masterpiece - and one which, personally, I don't understand. As I've been making this list, I created a playlist of all the songs in ranked order, and whenever I work on the list, I start with the track I'm working on, which means I've heard Infinite Dreams about...10 times in the past 2 weeks, and I think it's really good, but not all time masterpiece great. But Maidenfans.com has spoken!

As you can see above, that is the final track from the lauded 1988 release Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, possibly one of the best Iron Maiden albums of all time (I am frequently told). The Number of the Beast announced Iron Maiden; Powerslave coronated Iron Maiden; Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was a monolith built by a great monarch to last all time. How appropriate a cover if you think in those forms! The numbers on this album are simply astronomical. Beloved for all time.

Choice comments:

This is a truly great song. At the time of its release, Maiden hadn't done any song quite like it which is part of the reason I like it so much. It has another one of Maiden's many great instrumental sections as well as very good lyrics and a brilliant intro.

I still don't much like the first 30 or 40 seconds of the song ("Infinite dreams, I can't deny them -- Infinity is hard to comprehend..." that sounds so silly!) but the remaining 5+minutes of the song are truly masterful. I would put this right up there with Hallowed be thy name and Ancient Mariner as some of Maiden's very best songs!

Infinite Dreams is jammed full of interesting melodies and riffs that are woven together into one of the more adventurous and less repetitious songs of Steve's career. The song has a unique groove from the beginning, the guitarwork is superb and Bruce is in fine form vocally plus he releases one hell of a scream. However, what prevents this song from attaining immortal status in my mind is that it contains the most Andrew Lloyd-Webberish moment of the band's catalogue when Bruce sings "Help me, help me to find my true self without seeing the future. Save me...etc". But apart from this momentary "Jesus Christ Superstar" tribute the song is a classic.

Perhaps the strongest song on the album, with Bruce's vocal being a highlight for me. The Clairvoyant however, is my album favorite. SSOASS was not a banner album for me at the time of it's release, but my appreciation of it has grown over the years. It seems I don't hold the album in as high regard as many, but I think there are some great tunes...this is one of them.

Ok, if this song had more elaborate solos, it would be the perfect Iron Maiden song in my ears. Frankly, both Hallowed and ROTAM would blow it's smoke if it had solos like those two tracks do.

What's more to say about this one? Perfect mood, perfect production, perfect lyrics, perfect harmonies, progressive as hell, there's something going on from start to end, not a single 10 seconds of the song that are same...

From the Axis: Bold As Love style Hendrixisms of the opening verses, through the many changes in key, tempo and dynamics, to the harmonies that envelop everything, this is a masterpiece of composition and arrangement. The lyrics manage to be profound without sounding daft, and Bruce projects them tremendously. The famous scream at 3:14 is one of his most sinister moments in the Maiden discography. The band play like a single organism throughout, and it's hard to imagine the whole track being put together piece by piece. Like certain other songs, such as 'Bohemian Rhapsody', I almost imagine that this one was "discovered", and has always existed in some way, such is the perfection of its interlocking parts.

The solos are brief, but incredibly catchy. The bluesy clean guitars during the first verse (especially Murray's) are some of my favorite Maiden guitar work of all time. Overall, one of my favorite tunes for guitar in the whole catalog.

I will say that I don't love Infinite Dreams. Many people do, I find it to be less good than several other songs from this album. It's proggy and neat, but also slow and kinda...meh. I like it, without loving it, but I recognize that it has some great music.

After the sprawling musical journey, we come back to familiar territory, but it's not exactly the same. The final verse is a bit more heavy and uptempo than when that part originally appeared.

Such a unique, unpredictable tune.

This song should be two or three steps higher, but in 2016 it got only a 9.00 even for a ranking, suggesting it is only the 29th best song, which is a proposition I find ludicrous. From 3rd to 29th, which makes me wonder if there aren't some protest votes against the idea of a Blaze song being this good, which it is. Otherwise never lower than 14th and frequently 5th or higher, this track is confirmed as the true masterpiece of the Blaze era of Iron Maiden.

Standing alone in the wind and rain, feeling the fear that is growing. Sensing the change in the tide again, brought by the storm that is brewing...

And that's the last Blaze song. The X Factor wasn't well loved when it was released - legend has it that Steve was ready to fight the Kerrang reporter who trashed the album - and we're left wondering why that is. Was it Blaze? Was it the production? Was it the simple fact that metal was at its absolute low, betrayed by its bastard son grunge and inbred child nu-metal? Was it poor decisions by Steve? The truth is somewhere in the middle, as in all things, but we know this - Steve Harris & crew believed in this album in a way they hadn't believed since, probably, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. It's a deeply personal album to Steve, and it seems entirely likely that if he couldn't have made it this way, there'd be no Iron Maiden today.

Steve Harris has said before that Genesis was one of his early influences, and I've always thought that he was most likely aware of the Genesis lyric and wrote those lines of Sign of the Cross at least partially in tribute. It's worth noting that both Sign of the Cross and Supper's Ready have a lot of religious imagery in the lyrics, and both are very long songs with multiple sections.

Over 11 minutes long, this is a totally untypical Maiden album opener - normally being a 4 minute single-material song.

The slow, dark build-up works brilliant, breaking into fast guitar riffs. Sets the tone for a definitely dark-feeling album, and is just a fantastic song. Probably the best on the album.

Though i find it interesting how it was placed at the start of the album, was Steve so nervous about the new singer that he felt the need to place the epic song (which are usually the best ones on the albums) at the start so as to try and grab the attention of the listeners straight away, so as to prove the band can still cut it without Bruce?

''Sign Of The Cross'' is one of my favourite songs by Maiden, so the song meaning has been very important to me. Here's my interpetation. The music is VERY dark and sad. This is not ironic or funny, this is DEAD serious. The whole mood of the song is like that. Lyrically, I think it's about the fear of being judged. Either by God or the Church the character is obviousily scared to death that he's being judged.

This song is all about the atmosphere. Like Foro, I really enjoy the Gregorian Chant and the intro that follows really sets the scene. Then the main song kicks in and how. The dark lyrics perfectly fit the mood of the song. The pre-chorus is great (They'll be saying their prayers...) and the chorus that follows is one of the most under rated of Maiden career. The instrumental, is one of the finest things Maiden have wrote. Initially there are some excellent melodies before the returning Gregorian chant kicks off one of the greatest 5 minutes in metal. The song takes on a more sinister form straight after, maintaining the dark vibe before the song kicks on again. 7:56 is the start of a brilliant guitar melody, before some excellent solos carry it on before the guitar melody returns. Then the greatest section of the song comes, the part the whole instrumental section is building to and even the brilliant build up to it.

And I'm sure this will be controversial, but I'm going to state it anyway. This is the last GREAT epic song solely written by Harris. There have been good ones since (Clansman, Blood Brothers) but nothing quite as well done as Sign of the Cross. At least to my ears.

Oh man what a song. I like Blaze's performance in the song, it has great vocal melodies and Blaze sings them very well. The song is another example of Steve Harris' genius. Great, dark but energic intro tells you what's going on and what you should expect from the song. The rising part which starts at the beginning of the third minute is amazing. It's a nice bridge that connect the energic parts of the song with the dark, amazing melodies. The first slow solo is really great. It has the dark atmosphere of the album. Fast solos, fantastic genius melodies come after it. All I can say is masterpiece.

I can be a little annoyed when the album starts very quite, cause I don't know if the volume is right or my ears will die when it gets going. So I often checks the volume on another song first and then go back and start the record. On some records this somehow annoys me, the X factor is one of them.

Sign of the Cross is an extreme exercise in moodiness that takes its title from Umberto Eco’s book, The Name of the Rose, though the lyrics mostly deal with a lone protagonist possibly facing torture at the hands of the Inquisition. It is a true Steve Harris epic and one of Iron Maiden’s best songs, despite it’s atmospheric passages and overall length. Blaze Bayley’s introduction is an almost whispered intro and it is clear that we are in for a very different Iron Maiden experience.

And that's the last Blaze song. The X Factor wasn't well loved when it was released - legend has it that Steve was ready to fight the Kerrang reporter who trashed the album - and we're left wondering why that is. Was it Blaze? Was it the production? Was it the simple fact that metal was at its absolute low, betrayed by its bastard son grunge and inbred child nu-metal? Was it poor decisions by Steve? The truth is somewhere in the middle, as in all things, but we know this - Steve Harris & crew believed in this album in a way they hadn't believed since, probably Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. It's a deeply personal album to Steve, and it seems entirely likely that if he couldn't have made it this way, there'd be no Iron Maiden today.

I think it's good on them. The X Factor isn't half as bad as most would want you to believe, and you can tell the band put their all into it. Blaze shines as the vocalist, and while I must admit the album can be a bit of a depressive overload and possibly could have been shortened a bit, I'm not gonna argue that it should have happened. Because it's a good album. Period.

Sign of the Cross is only top 10 because of the Bruce RiR version. Sorry, Blaze's voice knocks any song down 30 spots. He's just not a good singer for Maiden.

It physically hurts me to put this only at sixth.

Cruelty has a human heart, every man does play his part, the terror of the men we kill, the human heart is hungry still.
I stand my ground for the very last time, gun is ready as I stand in line, now we wait for the whistle to blow, rush of blood and over we go...

For my money, the absolute best moment in the Iron Maiden discography is the "over the top" in Paschendale, after Bruce tells us that moment has come. The drums, the guns fade. The bombardment of the enemy trench stops, preparing the way for the charge. The tap of the rain, the symbols, suddenly heard again in that damning silence. And then you hear the guitars start in. One machine gun. And then another. And then with Dave's solo, a barrage of them. The desperation, the passion, the battle. Almighty Hell on Earth. Enfilade fire as Adrian's solo starts, another battery of guns firing. Bullets tearing flesh. Another battalion of men gone, just...gone. Bruce's wail, a soldier alone in the battlefield, surrounded by thousands of men, all alone, all drowning and bleeding and dying with him.

Blood is falling like the rain, its crimson cloak unveiled again, the sound of shells can't hide their shame, and so we die in Paschendale...

The last desperate gasp with Janick. Frantic. Insane. Scuttling from shellhole to shellhole, up and down, dodging, trying to live, trying until the bass and drum return. As the guns start - the other side's guns. The symphony of death erupts to doom what men remain.

I weep, writing this, thinking about this image, this moment, damning the cruelties in our past and present and future.

Paschendale is IMO more than another classic - I think it is hands down the best Maiden song EVER! And each time I hear it, I become more sure of that.

It's one of the best Maiden song, and very different from the other classical songs.

Adrian's slow tapping is really great : it's like an despaired SOS...

What I really think makes this song so great is that the music illustrates so well the contrasts of a war - it is nearly silence, people waiting, knowing what is waiting for them, and then hell breaks loose, before it becomes silent again, and so on. Actually, more than once I have been on the edge of crying when the last distorted tone of the last heavy part fades out, the hi-hat comes in and then H's guitar again.

It is such a moving song, in my opinion one of Maidens best songs in both music and lyrics, making it one of my definitive favourites.

Paschendale is not only Iron Maiden's greatest effort, but also the finest piece of rock n roll music ever recorded. I do not state this lightly. I personally measure songs by their ability to move me in some direction, to take me to a different place and different state of mind. Again personally, I can state unequivocally that no song in my life has ever had the effect on me as this masterpiece does.

I've always liked this song, but I was never really in love with it. It was "Paschendale", a great Maiden epic. I've been listening to it a lot more lately, especially the Death on the Road version, and somehow it just clicked for me a few days ago. From "Cruelty has a human heart; every man must play his part" onward, it's just perfect. Listening to it, you FEEL like you're in war-zone, but at the same time I can't imagine what it must be like to be facing that for real. Going into the trenches, fueled by adrenaline but scared for your life.

Paschen-fucking-dale is awesome. It deserves all of the praise that this forum gives it, and more.

This is a masterpiece of songwriting, not a single instant is superfluous or needless. So much is happening there, and you really do feel like you are there, in the trench, the mud, with death and despair all around you. I think the lyrics could have been a little bit better at times: I have never liked the way Bruce sings German war propaganda machine, such before has never been seen... it's one or two syllables too long. There you have it: If that is the level I'm complaining at, you have a bloody amazing song.

A great epic, this is what Maiden does best IMO (tell a story not just with the lyrics, but with the guitars and drums), they set the entire mood and it really brings you in the story.

Great songs but not better than Dance of Death and certainly not the best 2000> song. Still I like this song very much even though Maiden have many many other songs I like more than Paschendale

I just really don't like this song. I think it is too long, overblown, doesn't relly have a hook and seems like a series of good ideas that doesn't coalesce. There are some interesting parts but I never find myself longing to hear Paschendale. I don't begrudge all of you who seem to think this is one of the top 3 Maiden songs. it simply doesn't work for me. From DoD i like Rainmaker, Face in the Sand, No More Lies and Dance of Death much better.

Paschendale is so good that the band would spend their entire next album trying to recreate it.
