Wow. Look at that deviation. This song is a 9/10, it has always been a 9/10, and it will always be a 9/10. Some call it overplayed, and maybe a handful don't get it, but there's definitely a lot of people who consider it to be one of the ultimate rocker songs. It's also iconic - would Iron Maiden, a band sometimes simply known as "The Beast", be what it became without this track? Certainly a classic, an excellent track, and deserving of its place. I don't expect this one to move anytime soon.

Please note: This song is tied with Empire of the Clouds and For the Greater Good of God; I have corrected those two songs' placement in the rankings to reflect this as a three-way tie at position 23.

Anyway, I quite like this song. It has that lovely intro, brilliant raging atmosphere, and some class solos. Great scram by Bruce, and brilliant lyrics. I'm not sure if this is in the commentary-I think it might be-but the lyrics have quite a big parallel with Tam O'Shanter by Robert Burns, which is just another argument you can throw at anybody who tries the old 'Satanism' claim. But, if that fails, you can always show them the video, although they will probably remind you that any Satanic band worth their salt will always idolise Godzilla and Wolfman :rolleyes: Yes, it's overplayed, but a great song nonetheless.

Bruce told in his last Friday Rock Show that when he had trouble doing the intro lines of this song, over and over again.. that Martin Birch told him about Dio recording his first lines of the song "Heaven and Hell". Dio also had to repeat the intro lines several times, by Martin's request. Martin told Dio to "sing those lines like your whole life is in them" (or something like that).

Bruce listened to this story, stopped trying to record these lines that day. And later that night he played that track a couple of times, and he listened to these lines and realized there's more than music alone. There's soul as well. It helped him to do the job.

The spoken intro is cool, as is the intro riff along with 2 very good solos, but I just can't get myself to rate this song very high. I am that sick and tired of it, I'll usually skip it when it comes on. Alot of my friends that listen to Maiden (if only a few of their songs) are like, "How awesome is the Number of the Beast (and The Trooper and Run to the Hills)", and I'm like "Check out all of these other more awesome Maiden songs" and they never do.

I've felt for years that this song is absolutely perfect; lean and mean. In only 291 seconds: spoken intro, an intro/coda verse, 3 more verse/chorus pairs telling a horrific story, 2 guitar solos and even a bass solo. All built into a concise arch structure, which takes the listener on a subtle but important musical round trip...

The intro verse contrasts with the coda verse to show the change in the narrator, all as a dramatic frame for the "normal" song contained within. A clear case of setting a scene, taking us on a journey, and returning "home" but changed. Did Steve Harris think this through and intend this directly? Almost certainly not. The fact that he instinctively follows classical dramatic structures proves his storytelling talents go deeper than a gallop and singing about war.

I believe For the Greater Good of God is the highest scoring overall from my own top 10 at 23. :)

Lowest is Judgement of Heaven all the way down at 114. :( :facepalm:

Interestingly, this track doesn't get universal acclaim - it has a handful of dedicated detractors, who either do not care to see the intricate ballad-style construction of the track, or do not care for the same. All that being said, this bold and unique Iron Maiden track has landed quite high in the rankings in 2016, coming in at 25 - quite the accomplishment. I have no idea where this will go, previous experience suggests it will slide a bit once it sinks in more, but it is possible this one will rise. Who knows!
