THE IRON MAIDEN COVERENDUM: Angel Stage (FINAL!)

Van Canto should never have been more than YouTube cover band or something. How they made a career out of this is beyond me. So fucking annoying, I could barely make it till the end.

I never really cared much for Sanctuary, but this cover is probably better than the original.

Testament does an OK cover of Powerslave, but Anaal Nathrakh's cover is way better. Chuck Billy should've growled for the chorus, would've been cool. Still, I'll take this over Steel Prophet, who isn't my nomination per se; I just sent it to Diesel 11 so that he has enough songs for the game. I never even heard it before. So no need for apologies, @Jer :D I don't like Purgatory anyway.

Coverendum update!

I'm quite torn in the first pair. Rage do a more up to date version of Trooper, sounding great guitar and drums-wise, although the vocals sound a bit painful and also sound like they're performed in a small carboard box. Hellsongs do come up with something completely different for RTTH. Reminds me of Joan Baez protest singer stuff. Think I'll go for Hellsongs for not just following the script and doing it well.

You know, I think Anthrax's Remember Tomorrow sounds better than the original....
The Phantom cover surprises me. 1) it sounds incredibly similar to the original (apart from the slight live performance cockups and nasty vocal warble that isn't proper vibrato) 2) it sounds nothing like the Anathema I'm used to hearing. Conclusion = they bring nothing new to this song, not even their own style.
Definitely Anthrax.

Hellsongs cover is ludicrously interesting. I love the stripped down, mournful rendition, I just wish they stuck to a more specific melody. It just kinda sounds like the singer is throwing out words at random sometimes. Still, better than the boring competition.

ANTHRAX 1000 times. I like Anathema, but that cover is played just like the original, but sloppier.

I like the idea of the Hellsongs cover, but aside from the lyrics and the chorus melody it’s a completely different song. Is it still a cover if it completely abandons the music for the majority of the song...? Also, the vocals have a pretty thick accent and weird inflection. Meanwhile the Rage track is a faithful, serviceable, but completely unimpressive cover. Sorry, @Lamia020281, but I must unenthusiastically vote for @Night Prowler ’s choice here. Winner: Rage

The Anthrax track is a pretty high quality faithful cover, but it didn’t blow me away or anything. The Anathema cover has some mistakes, but I think the singers actually did a better job with it than Paul did, because you can tell what they’re singing and that cheesy bit in the middle doesn’t sound cheesy in their version. That said, I don’t really like “Phantom Of The Opera” as a song, and the many weaknesses of the verse are still on full display here, so I’m going to stick with @The_7th_one ‘s nominee. Winner: Anthrax

Still time for a quickie vote!

Voted Hellsongs, because that was my nomination. :)

And Anthrax. This was a bit hard though, because I don't really like either of the originals. And it's hard to be objective, if that's the case. (Although if I don't like either of them, the amount of difficulty is the same for both, right?)

First two....not a great choice to make. A good cover of a Maiden song I find meh, and a very generic Sabaton cover of a song I really like. I'm going with Grave Digger for making something of Running Free, rather than just weakly playing a Maiden song for the heck of it.

Okay, Wrathchild next. This is really odd, it sounds pretty much like the original, but with a nod to black metal vocals. Certainly does something to the song, but I'm not sure it really enhances anything or puts a new spin on anything, and doesn't entirely capture the original either. Just a mismatch of two styles.

Meanwhile I was thoroughly expecting Cradle of Filth's Hallowed to be awful. And the vocals are. Sounds like a child having a tantrum, or a death metal singer trying out helium for the first time. I'm going to give it to Cradle of Filth anyway, though, because I like the bit of atmosphere they add (keyboards?) and the screams. With better vocals, this could have been a really excellent cover that added a darker edge to this song.

Edit: and by 'better' I don't mean 'clean vocals'. Just a deeper growl.

A weak round all around.

The first pairing features covers of songs I don’t particularly like, with questionable English-as-a-second-language vocals. Grave Digger at least adds some balls to “Running Free”, while Sabaton just adds marching drums, rolling R’s, and “beerial grounds” to “Afraid To Shoot Strangers”. Congratusorrylations, @Kalata, as you both win and lose this one. Winner: Grave Digger

This second match is another lose-lose proposition for the listener with dueling extreme vocals. Amusingly, Ihsahn’s vocalist almost sounds like Paul Di’anno after smoking all night and getting the world’s worst case of laryngitis, and this cover of “Wrathchild” almost makes some kind of sense until the cheesy synth horns come in. I don’t know WTF they were thinking with that. Meanwhile, Cradle Of Filth covers a much better song, and the music itself is faithful and fine, but the vocals are even more intolerable here than on the Ihsahn track. Supremely grating. It’s depressing to have to pick either of these, but I guess I’ll go with the more faithful rendition of the better song. Sorry, Night Phooten. Winner: Cradle Of Filth
