THE IRON MAIDEN COVERENDUM: Angel Stage (FINAL!)

I thought Hellsongs were playing Road Trippin' by RHCP at first. Don't like these shitty elevator music types of covers. Rage's cover is great, and so is the person who nominated it. Genius!

Anthrax vs. Anathema - Don't care for either of the bands and the covers bring nothing new. Went with Anthrax as it didn't have (live) mistakes and because Anathema are major posers.

Grave Digger's cover wasn't as shitty as I expected it to be. Still can't stand them. Sabaton's cover isn't anything special either tbh.

Ihsahn didn't use "shitty synth horns", it was a real saxophone. Great cover with at least something new in it. I really don't like Danny Filth's vocals... Cover itself is competent, but he ruins everything.

I really don't love Sabaton's cover of ATSS with it's video game-sounding symphonic flourishes, but it's better than the Running Free cover (which is fine, but also feels really hollow).

Ihsahn's vocals are bad, but the production is fun and I adore the horns. Cradle of Filth's vocals are fucking putrid.

Anyone wanna break the tie between Ihsahn and Cradle Of Filth? If no one does I'll just decide myself tonight since I didn't get a chance to listen to this round.

The Kreator cover is mostly faithful musically, though they do their own thing with the solo section, which suffers from the loss of the bass fills. And unfortunately the vocals are pretty bad here and actively detract from the song. Meanwhile, the Metallica cover is top shelf stuff — well performed, well executed, with Metallica’s distinctive stamp all over the heavy parts. Sorry, 7th_Prowler, but Mr. Kalatabocker’s nominee is the clear winner here. Winner: Metallica

I never would have expected a power metal take on “Die With Your Boots On”, but here we have it. Parts of it I like (like eliminating the cringey “if you’re gonna die” gang vocal), but there are also some weird changes to the vocal melody in places, and I’m not sure the song works very well with this much synth in it. Plus the singer has some performance issues, and English isn’t his strongest language. Then we have this polka(?) version of “The Number Of The Beast”, which is hilarious, especially when they work in “When The Saints Go Marching In”, which somehow fits perfectly. I don’t understand a word of this, but I had a smile on my face the entire time; so congratusorrylations @Lamia020281, your more exotic choice comes out on top here. Winner: Eläkeläiset

Pretty much agreeing with @Jer here.
Kreator does a decent job but my vote goes to Metallica.
They really make the song their own.

As much as I love Sonata Arctica, I prefer the funny folky Finnish version of The Number Of The Beast. Good picks here @Lamia020281.

Kreator was surprisingly good, Metallica maybe a bit subdued (not in a good way, I mean).

Two of my nominations, interesting! Sonata Arctica has a decent cover, although, as Jer says, the vocalist's accent is appalling. Finnish vowel sounds work differently from English, which makes the English spoken by many Finns sound strange.
And then we get to Eläkeläiset... :p A humour band that I like a lot. This song is not Number of the Beast in Finnish, but a completely different narrative. Unfortunately the lyrics require not only a perfect understanding of Finnish, but also thorough knowledge of the culture. I thought I would have translated the song, but the translation doesn't capture the essence of the humour, and these lyrics are also a bit... um... harsh humour, so maybe better not translate so there won't be any hassle. The style is not quite polka, but a Finnish dance called humppa. Pretty much all Eläkeläiset lyrics are about Finnish old-age grandpas who drink a lot of booze, dance humppa, try to woo some grannies while they're at it and do other senior citizen stuff. I really wish I could explain it to you in all its glory, so you could understand how funny it is, but this is the best I could do. :D

I still think it's worth mentioning that we Finns are among the world's best non-native English speakers.
