The Concert Thread

I saw Slayer with a few opening acts last night. I'm in a lot of pain this morning - the gig was from 6 - 11, and we got there around 5:30 - that is a lot of time to stand on a concrete floor. However, still a great night.

There will be no spoilers for the concert, as I don't really care :)

Cannibal Corpse opened. They had a 6 song set, and the arena was pretty empty. I don't think that's because few people wanted to see Cannibal Corpse, but it's more because Ottawa is a 9-5 town and getting to Kanata at 5 PM is hard - we left at 4 PM from my house and got to the arena at 5:15. My buddy (big Cannibal Corpse fan) had another friend coming and it took him over 1.75 hours to cross downtown. They played a pretty standard set of Cannibal Corpse fare, and the people who were there for them really loved it. I endured it (earplugs in) and was impressed with Corpsegrinder's headbanging capacities. But otherwise, for me, fairly unremarkable.

Next up was Amon Amarth - they were the band I was really going to see. Really got into their set, too. Johan Hegg is super charismatic and really got the crowd going. They played 3-4 songs off Berserker and mostly the hits otherwise, but for a 10 song set were really good. Great stage set for an opening act with cool banners and riser-covers. Impressed one of the band guys in the sound booth by knowing how to do cheers in Swedish, so that was fun. I definitely think this show moved me firmly into the "fan" category for this band - I'll go see them again.

Lamb of God also got a 10 song set, and I will be honest - they were very, very meh. Lead singer was alright in terms of movement and talking to the crowd, but I legitimately can not care less about this band. Cannibal Corpse at least I felt something - even if it was kinda disgust - but for Lamb of God I was really meh. Would have gone and gotten food/beer during but I didn't want to upset my buddy, who was really into it.

Slayer played 20 songs, and they had a more intricate stage show, but not really that much. 4 backdrops throughout the show, no screens, and lots and lots of fire. Tom Araya's voice blew out about halfway through the set, but he'd already played Gemini by that point, so it was ok. I think this convinced me to listen to more Slayer in the future, but I can honestly say that there was a point where the pain of standing was getting a little much and I was just like....ok, play Angel of Death already so I can go home.

The CTC had a 2/3rds full floor - they did not allow that many people onto the floor, I thought, and it was "sold out", and the lower and middle bowls, with a few upper sections open. Probably around 8000 people there, and very few empty seats, but there were some. Interestingly enough, the band was very restrictive with what was allowed on the floor - no beer cans, and people were only allowed one alcoholic beverage at a time. I felt this was discriminatory so I complained, but I was informed it was the band's contract. There was also more police at this gig than at any gig I've ever been to, excepting Maiden in London 2017 (but we know why that had so many cops). So I suspect that Slayer's insurance was pretty restrictive on them, because I can't see Slayer caring about if I get hammered.

It's about time I give out my little review from this past weekend when I went to a two-day festival in Chicago.

I ended up arriving later than I wanted to on Saturday due to the travel taking me a little bit longer than I expected, and also some difficulties I encountered with checking in to my hotel room, so I missed most of the earlier bands. It was raining fairly heavily during the day though, so I really didn't mind too much.

I still got there in time to get a pretty good spot on the floor for Meshuggah, and they really brought it. I'm not all that familiar with them, so I couldn't even tell you what songs they played, but the crowd was really in to it. In fact a mosh pit ended up forming right next to where I was standing! I moshed for a little bit for the hell of it, but got tired out pretty quickly so I just moved to the side of it and remained there for the rest of their set.

Ghost was up next, and they are always a really fun band to see live. They played for exactly 1 hour, which is obviously a lot less than they play for at their own shows, but was still enough time to see just about all of the essentials. It was nice that it was dark out when they went on, so that definitely added to the atmosphere of it all. They also had a bit of pyro and fireworks and stuff with their show, which was pretty cool and not something I recall seeing during any of the two previous times I had seen Ghost.

System of a Down was the headliner for the first night, and now I'm glad to say I can finally cross them off my bucket list. I really don't know what to say other than it was pretty fucking incredible. With how little they tour these days, and the fact that "creative differences" are keeping them from writing or recording new music, it does seem a lot like their time left together as a band is limited. They still sounded great on Saturday, and the energy in the crowd was incredible. And since most of their songs are pretty short in duration, they ended up playing like 30 songs. If I never have the chance to see them again, I'll be forever grateful that I got to experience them this one time.

After the first night me and my buddy friend grabbed some White Castle, went back to the hotel room, and pretty much just crashed.

The next day I got to the venue much earlier, and we ended up doing some heavy tailgating in the parking lot with the people parked next to us, so I ended up missing the first few bands again.

The first band that played when I finally staggered into the stadium was In This Moment, who I would describe as a slightly heavier version of Halestorm. They were ok I guess. I really don't remember much of them to be honest.

Gojira was up next, and I was pretty intoxicated when they started. I remember that they seemed to put on a really good show, but overall I just don't think they're my cup of tea. I wouldn't avoid seeing them again, but I'm not going to go out of my way to see them again either.

I somehow ended up in the VIP section, like four rows from the stage, for the next band  which was The Cult. They sounded alright, but they were put in the unfortunate spot of being sandwiched between Gojira and Tool, so the crowd wasn't really all that into it. I liked a few of their songs, but overall I gotta say they were pretty unremarkable.

I ended up needing to piss and grab another beer, so unfortunately I wasn't able to keep my amazing spot for Tool. It didn't really matter though, because Tool is amazing no matter where you see them from. They are actually playing some brand new songs from their upcoming album too, so that alone makes seeing them completely worth it. The last 3 songs of the show,
Jambi, Forty Six & 2, and Stinkfist
, was a closing sequence that's almost untoppable by any band ever.

All in all, it was a pretty great weekend.

Last night I saw Alexisonfire in Alexandra Palace in North London (not far from Tottenham Hotspur's stadium, it's visible from the hill). I was a big fan of them for a couple of years when I was a teenager but I lost track of them as I moved on from that Post-Hardcore/Screamo stuff. When I heard they'd disbanded in 2011 or whenever I was really disappointed that I hadn't managed to see them and realized that I hadn't heard any of their music since their second album. I did manage to see them at Reading Festival in 2015 (Metallica headlining) in the middle of the day when they got back together for a few shows and a year ago they played a show in London after they'd been at Download Festival but I wasn't able to go due to financial and geographic constraints. When I saw this show come up I was super excited for sure as I would finally get to see them do a headline set. Thank God it was on a Saturday as Alexandra Palace is a pain in the arse to get home from as it's further out of Central London that many other venues.

It was a bloody good show with 20 songs and they opened with their best ('Accidents') which makes the rest of the show a bit of the bonus after that. A very sweaty night and absolutely worth getting to see them play a bunch of songs I listened to a lot when I was 14. In fact I enjoyed it so much that I would love to see them again!

The support bands - Child's Pose and Chastity - were pretty crap. During the latter I was trying to watch the Champions League Final on my phone. They also annoyed me by talking about politics. Any foreign band visiting the UK should take note that if they're going to commentate on Brexit that about 50% of the people on the venue probably voted for it to happen since it's the only UK show of the tour and in England. Leave that shit out of my concerts please.

Next up is Symphony X on D-Day!

Got to L'Astral about 5 minutes after the doors opened. Checked out the merch stand and unfortunately they had no t-shirts in my size, but the shirts weren't great either, so I'm not that broken up. Grabbed a couple beers and even though I missed doors opening, I was about 3 people from the stage for the opening act, Valfreya. Valfreya was a 6 piece (2 guitars, bass, drum, violin, vocalist) with fairly bland growl vocals from one guitarist and the singer. They played some metalized Quebec folk songs as well. Overall they were very bland, but they had a guest bassist for the last song who was pretty fucking awesome, actually. The sound was really poor during this and it sounded like a wall of noise, with or without earplugs.

Aether Realm was next. A few pretty serious Aether Realm fans in the audience. The lead singer was very charismatic, if also very drunk. Ended up next to this very, very hot chick and he kept giving her the "I wanna fuck you eyes", and she kept jumping into me to try to get up towards him. Which was OK. Music was really interesting, but I still find growls to be utterly disengaging in almost every situation. The music was good enough to want to give them a spin, though, so I will do that later.

Gloryhammer was pretty insane, of course. They played the same 14 song set they played the night before, so no surprises. I was also shocked they only played 14 songs on a headline tour, considering none of them are what you might call long. There will be no spoilers. They opened with The Siege of Dunkeld, followed by Gloryhammer. By the time they were in the second set crowd surfers were going nuts, but there was no barrier, so the crowd surfers were ending up on the stage. One guy toppled into Hoots and pretty got kicked out, apparently he hates them. I thought that was quite funny. The two new songs played quite well, I thought.

They followed up with Questlords of Inverness, Ride to Galactic Fortress! which is the most power metal name for a song ever. Moshing was violent during that song, but I held on pretty good. They played Land of Unicorns next, which I thought was the weakest of the newer songs played. However, Masters of the Galaxy was fucking awesome, and will clearly replace Hail to Crail going forward.

About this time a guy started fucking elbowing me every time the crowd pushed. Like I get it, you're getting pushed, but shoving your elbow into my ribs doesn't stop the 600 people behind me from shoving me into you. So after 3-4 I gave him one back as hard as I could and told him to fuck off or he'd get more. He fucked off, so that was good.

They played more songs off 1992 than they did off of Terrorvortex which I found to be a little sad. After this they played Legend of the Astral Hammer and Goblin King of the Darkstorm Galaxy. After Darkstorm, my buddy tapped out of fighting up front, so we fell back to watch from the back. Tiny venue means no bad place to stand, really. As I watched Magic Dragon (absolutely a boring song for the band) I was really impressed with Thomas Winkler's charisma. The guy really owns the stage and he can pull a crowd into the palm of his hand. At the same time, it's interesting to watch Chris Bowes not take over the stage like he does with Alestorm. This is clearly a passion project for him, but it is interesting to watch him give the stage to three very charismatic front performers and mostly stay in the back and play the keys.

The Hollywood Hootsman and Hootsforce came next, very aggressive and hard. Hootsforce played well, but I will still put it in the lower half of the new album. Crowd was starting to tire out by now, not much crowd surfing going on. After Hootsforce they went into the final bit - Heroes (of Dundee) which again, not my favourite "deep cut", Angus McFife, Universe on Fire (still amazing live) and, of course, The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee. Overall a great concert that I had a lot of fun with but I think if you put out a new album and only play 5 songs from it but play 6 from the one before...I was really hoping for Legendary Magic Jetpack to make the list, but sadly, they played more 1992. Oh well. Still wort $40 and sore knees.

Saw Metallica and Ghost yesterday in Slane Castle.

Venue: I'd say the crowd was at least the 75,000 that was being quoted in the papers during the week, it seemed packed everywhere and you have a real good view of the size of the crowd/stage as the venue is in a river valley so there's quite a steep slope. I'd never been to Slane before mainly because it's usually bands I don't like and the only times bands I like played I was either too young or most recently GNR clashed with Maiden playing in London. I'd heard it would be a nightmare from an organisation point of view but the only complaint I have is getting out of the venue is dangerous the exit is probably only about 10-15 feet across and on a slope, not ideal for a crowd that size. It was a very long walk back to the car park but that helped dissipate the crowd so it only took 20 mins to find my car and get out.

Third time seeing Ghost. I reckon he's a much better frontman in the new outfit than when he was Papa, just in terms of visibility and moving around. Setlist was good, can't really go wrong when you're a band with only 4 albums and are in your heyday playing in a short support slot circa an hour. They seemed to go down well with the crowd even though the only tracks anyone near me seemed to know were Year Zero, Dance Macabre and Square Hammer. Despite going down well with the crowd, he was getting somewhat muted reaction to his crowd banter, which I can only attribute to the crowd not understanding his accent/lisp:lol:

First time seeing Metallica. They were excellent. Set list was not too dissimilar from a Maiden Album tour, I'd have liked to see Battery, Sanitarium and Whiplash but I can only blame myself for taking so long to bother to go see them. Perhaps next time ;) Checking setlist.fm they seem to have switched Whiskey in the Jar into where The god the Failed/Thing that Should not Be usually is, no big deal for me as I'm not a fan of all 3 songs but I imagine Whiskey would have got the best reaction from the crowd by a long way. Crowd seemed to have a bizarre taste as they went mad for Memory Remains and especially Frantic but not so much Ride the Lightning! Must be an age thing. It was the same at Slayer with people seemingly not knowing Black Magic and Hell Awaits so much. Hetfield seems to be singing a lot better than on youtube videos I've checked out in the past. Lars is Lars, jaysus if he was playing with any less of a tighter rhythm section than Hetfield and Trujillo he'd never get away with it. Kirk wasn't as bad as he can be but when himself and Hetfield play harmonies it sounds like they're torturing cats. I was dreading the corny Rob/Kirk bit but they did the Wild Rover fairly tightly so it was more craic than cringe.
