Last night I saw Brass Against. Great show, front woman is a dynamo. There was much dancing and head banging, very sore neck today.
Next up is Slash Feat Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators. They are playing an outdoor gig in Belfast on Wednesday. Ticketmaster are actually givin away free tickets. Glad I hadn't bought a ticket. They must have sold fuck all tickets.
Then its the one I'm really lookin forward to; Amon Amarth next Monday. Behemoth are supporting. Never really listened to them but apparently they are good live.

Also coming up are....

Mavis Staples
Four Tet
Happy Mondays
Tinariwen
The Darkness

Saw Stryper couple of Fridays ago and, even though I enjoyed it, forget to post! I saw them back on the To Hell With the Devil tour 30 years ago and I think they are better live now. The guitar tone sounds JUST like the cds. Love Michael & Oz's playing! The Soldiers Under Command white vinyl printed the lead guitar credits with the lyrics so I already knew who played which solo but on the newer material, every song had the arrangement of Michael 1st then Oz.

I think even though the crowd enjoyed the covers, I would rather have heard more originals. Even though few days earlier Michael announced on Blabbermouth he had a cold, he sounded good to me.

As a point of irony, I was listening to Stryper when I started typing but now have switched to Ghost! That would be an interesting Heaven vs Hell tour!

Did you know Ted Cruz is a member of Stryper?

Found out Striker added another local band, Infrared, tonight. They were on the list for a later concert so no big deal.

Left work around 5 and went down to the Market where the venue is, and after some consternation as to where to grab food I realized that the bar is only 3 blocks from The Koven, Ottawa's heavy metal bar. Waiting for my buddy, I popped in to have a few pre-concert beers, as you do, started chatting at the bar with the owner and another fellow who was in town for a conference from San Francisco. A third guy joined us, the executive director of a museum on Haida Gwaii. Partway through our meal/beers Striker walked in for food, had a quick chat with them before they went to the patio. So kinda cool to see the act before the gig.

The food at The Koven is fucking phenomenal, if you're ever in Ottawa you must eat there. The owner gets to meet all sorts of acts, my favourite story is from last year when Priest played and Richie Faulkner showed up to drink the night away.

Anyway, convinced the two fellows out of town to go to the show. We showed up around 7:15 and there was maybe 20 people there. Got to try the new Megadeth beer, it was OK. Beni at the Koven actually got a keg while we were there but it wasn't cold, so I gotta stop back and try it on tap. The first band was Unknown, from Cornwall, playing about 7-8 songs of fairly standard metalcore. It was fine, not necessarily my thing, but they seemed to have fun on stage.

Second act was local Ottawa thrash band Infrared. The guy from Haida Gwaii was really into them, especially when they rocked their song about the genocide of indigenous Canadians - he seemed to really respect them for calling it out. The band has a few more melodic numbers which was pretty surprising, but their core vein is very aggressive Slayer-esque thrash. Still, a decently fun band. I will be seeing them again in September when they open for Battle Beast at the same venue.

Striker didn't take too long to set up at all, barely had time to have a short chat and pound down a drink before they were on set. There was maybe 80 people there, which kinda sucked as the last time I saw them the place was packed. But hey, it's a Tuesday night and the university was out. All the same, it was a hell of a great show. Striker plays classic 80s style metal, in your face and aggressive and fun, but the band has a ton of charisma, everyone has a lot of fun and they make the crowd have a lot of fun. If you ever get a chance to see these guys, do so. They're just about to tour Western Canada in support of Steel Panther, but they decided to add a couple of dates in eastern Ontario before starting.

The whole gig was $15 and includes a copy of the newest Striker album, so it was pretty much a wash in terms of money, and a really great night out.

I downloaded the Slane gig from LiveMetallica.com, which is a fantastic resource. I'm in two minds about whether it would be good for Maiden to have something similar. Obviously it would be great to be able to get a show but I fear I'd be left bankrupt by buying physical copies of the whole tour:facepalm:

I love Download Festival weekend. Not because of the festival - fuck that - but because of the tours that get announced over the course, and if the aftermath of, the weekend. Alter Bridge, Amon Amarth and Delain tours have already been taken from the festival program. You next, Dream Theater.

I saw Every Time I Die, Mastodon and Coheed and Cambria last night at an outdoor venue here in Chicago. Technically this was a work event as I WAS POURING BEER BACKSTAGE FOR THE BANDS, CREW, AND THEIR FRIENDS! This was probably the coolest perk I've ever received from working at a brewery, as we literally had an all access pass to the venue and watched most of the gig from the side stage. Luckily, I had a coworker with me so we took turns pouring and watching the show.

Every Time I Die is a band I'm not familiar with and it will stay that way (though they are massively energetic performers). Saw half of Mastodon's set and it was cool. Still not the biggest fan and they performed during daylight so it was kinda weird, but they seemed to have a good time (at least everyone except Brent Hinds seemed to have a good time). Coheed absolutely killed it. Even though they had the worst weather (it rained lightly for their entire set plus heavy winds) they gave it their all and played some of their heavier tunes.

Our station was in the lounge by the band hospitality trailers. Unfortunately it was outside as well and the rain meant we didn't get a ton of face time with the artists. Troy from Mastodon wandered over at one point, however, and talked to us for 10 minutes about craft beer and how he's flying out to a show a day early just to visit one of his favorite breweries. Super cool guy. All in all a 10/10 evening that also happened to be work!

Waiting for Manowar in Sofia right now. True to themselves, they have no opening act, no music on the PA and they're projecting ads for their merch on the curtains onstage.
